Problem with Garmin 660

Hello everyone,

I wish someone will be able to help me with this little problem: When my sister use her Garmin 660 unit the GPS just can't connect on any satellites even after almost an hour on the road. She received some messages asking her "if she went over 100 miles", "if she's using the unit indoor", "reconfirm her position", etc.

I guess she will need to hit the reset button on the back of the unit but before doing that does anyone has any other suggestions or solutions ???

Thanks for your help

HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON

Strange Indeed

First question pops into mind is I hope she’s remembering to raise the antenna on the 660. That could be the cause of her problem. As for the messages, I've never seen the like on my 660.
If all else fails, the best route would be to hit the reset button. She’ll have to redo her favorites and poi’s and such but it should clear up the problem.
Again, make sure the antenna is up on the unit. It won’t access any of the satellites without it being raised up.
Good luck.

Hello Mr Blue2022, Thanks

Hello Mr Blue2022,

Thanks for your reply,

The antenna is up for sure. She's been using her unit for more than two years an knows it very well. The GPS always run ok until now.

Gps is on her dashboard, sometime running on the battery sometime with the cigarette adapter, with a good sky visability.

Outside?

Can she take it out of the car and get a sat lock?

new car?

did she recently change cars? garmin says that "metalized windshields" can effect reception.

Not a Good Sign

BigBen63, if nothing is resolved with a unit reset it may be the dreaded "antenna failure" problem that some of us has experienced. My 660 was just 6 mos. old when it wouldn't acquire satellites and I had to ship it to Raytech Electronique in Laval, Qc for servicing. Since my unit was still under warranty they just shipped me a refurb unit which is still working perfectly today. They never gave me an answer as to what the problem was with my old unit but I believe Garmin is aware of this "failure" problem with a certain percentage of their nuvi products. Don't know what Raytech and/or Garmin would do for your sister's unit since it is out of warranty (assuming she did not purchase additional warranty for 660). If she is in the Montreal area a call to Raytech maybe a good idea since they are the only authorized Garmin service center in Canada I believe. If they can't/won't help you with this problem to your satisfaction I would suggest contacting Garmin directly. They replaced my GTM 20 when it was out of warranty; Raytech had offered to fix the broken tabs on the mini-USB end for $270.00 and I declined. When I contacted Garmin and told them of my experience with Raytech they sent me a new GTM 20 free-of-charge, I just had to pay duty on it.

Hopefully one of these avenues will be able to solve your sister's 660 problem to her satisfaction and not leave her with the remaining option of purchasing another GPSr.

Same problem

I just bought the 660 and I have the same problem. Sometimes it won't work for hours just saying "acquiring satellite" and asks if I am indoors, etc. then just starts working again.

660 reset

hitting the reset button is no big deal. She won't lose anything it will just help eliminate any gremlns hanging around the unit.

I hope I don't have any

I hope I don't have any problems with the 670

GARMIN 660

My 660 will not lock up when I am moving and turn it on from a cold start. Generally when I plan to use it after it has been off for some time I turn it on and let it find itself while in a stationary position. From then on it will re-acquire just fine for the rest of the day. The next morning it usually needs to acquire from a stationary postion again.

send it back to garmin

send it back to garmin surprised

I had the same problem with

I had the same problem with my 650. I had to send mine back to Garmin and they sent me a replacement. Mine was still under warranty though.

Problem With Garmin 660

I've also occas. seen the message on my Nuvi 680 asking if I'm inside or have moved over 100 miles. I simply respond NO and it connects within a minute or two. I think I may have also seen this on my Nuvi 350.

This seems to happen in any car and under clear skies. The Nuvi's always have connected after I respond NO, so I have not pursued the mater further.

Back to normal...

Well the reset button seem to fix everything.

Her unit is now running like new !!! And as mentionned by one member, she didn't lost anything because of this resetting process.

Thanks to all of you

She was pretty lucky just

She was pretty lucky just resetting solved the problem. On my 660, it was working great for a pretty long drive, then on the way home, couldn't acquire satellites. Called Garmin, they had me do a soft & hard reset, no luck. Even though the unit was 13 mos old, they gave me a rma & I got a refurb unit a week later. It actually included newer maps & I think a new battery. Garmin is the greatest.
