Nuvi 255W questions

I just recently upgraded from a C340 to a Nuvi 255W (and love it so far).
I did notice a couple of things, though, that react differently, and wonder if anybody has a solution.
On the C340, when in map mode (not navigation mode), the banner at the top of the screen announced cross streets. For instance if you were on 18th st approaching Harrison street the banner would show "Harrison street ahead". the Nuvi only seems to show that you are "driving on 18th street".
I also notice that the brightness changed on me. I had it set to 80% (I was in auto color mode and it was during daylight hours). Early the next morning (before daylight) the brightness was at 20%. Could this have been because there are different brightness settings for daylight and nighttime? Or could it have been if I disconnected from a power source and was running on battery? Or could it have been if it was running on battery and the battery was low (I did get a low battery warning at one time)?

Yes, those are the default settings for daylight & nighttime
cross streets
On the C340, when in map mode (not navigation mode), the banner at the top of the screen announced cross streets.
Unfortunately, this is normal operation for the new nuvi models. Garmin has removed the upcoming cross street display on the green info bar, even on the top-of-the-line 7x5 series. The bar now instead only displays the street you are currently on. I, for one use and rely on the cross street display on my 7x0 units. Garmin will however likely include it back into the nuvi feature set in new model, thus requiring a paid upgrade.

Maybe we will get lucky

I have the Nuvi 265 wt and it shows the upcoming street I will turn on across the top of the screen plus arrow on which way I will turn..Not the street I am travelling on.Have 2009 maps with software version 4.60.

only when routing

this post is referring to use when NOT routing ... just viewing the map while driving.
your reference to arrow/cross streets is while routing
.
When you are navigating a route (Where To? & have a route active), the unit will perform as you describe.
The issue cross street issue being adressed is when you are NOT navigating a route and are just driving with the map screen. Older nuvis and Street Pilots displayed the next upcoming cross street in the green info bar. As you passed the street, the next upcoming street was displayed. This made it very easy to identify a cross street well in advance of actually seeing the street sign on the road. It's also much more apparent when you are in 2D mode. Newer models now only display the street you are currently on

DorkusNimrod - I, personnally, kind of like the 'current street' aspect of the display... living in the NE, many steets change names as you drive from one town to the next - I find it helpful to know what street I am on. Besides, the map (not color bar) shows the upcoming street. I don't need it in 2 places.
Not to mention how many times I've encountered streets with no street signs ... having the names on the nuvi is helpful!
I know you don't like the change (you discuss it in the 765 thread too), and I understand why, but I see and like the advantages of the "new" way.
Just offering a few counterpoints ....
What would be the real
What would be the real difference? When driving you still see all the upcoming side and cross streets as you approach.

user configurabilty is the answer
If Garmin would simply allow the end-user to make the decision what they would like displayed (cross street or current street), everyone would be happy.

This is likely assuming you are in 3D mode. Many users such as myself use 2D mode ("North up" and "track up") exclusively and the only the larger cross street names are displayed on the map. Smaller streets are frequently not. This is where having this cross street data on the green info bar is invaluable.

That is not going to happen
That is not going to happen until lots of users make Garmin aware of what they want.I have made some suggestions myself and can only hope they will make a change.

i really think they need
i really think they need alot more customizable parts of the nuvi,i have a magellan as well as 2 garmins and i can fully customize the fields on the magellan
255W
Maybe we will get lucky and it will be in a firmware upgrade.
They should make Nuvi more customizable that way user could decide what they want.
i noticed that on mine
i noticed that on mine ,though it is not to big of a deal because it is easier on the eyes when it is in day mode and dark out.i like day mode but somewhat dim, just because it is easier to read when it is dark in the truck
A couple of other things I noticed
On the 255W:
IF you are in "map" mode, not "navigate" and are on an Interstate highway, the banner at the top does NOT announce the road you are currently driving on, but instead announces the NEXT exit from the Interstate.
Also another tip:
This is for the people who view the maps in 2D "track up".
If you want to see the actual direction you are traveling instead of the "track up", just tap on the screen anywhere where there is no icon touch point. This will take you to a map view (which is always "north up") so you can see exactly what direction you are traveling (besides just knowing you are going North, South, East, or West, as the compass tells you). From this screen you can also select a point to navigate to, and can drag your finger accross ths screen to scroll the map, as well as zoom in and out. When done with this screen you can just push the back button and go back to your regular "Track up" map view. This works in both "map" mode and "navigate" mode.
