Color codes on roads on the map?

this may be a real noob question, but can someone tell me the color coding on the maps?

I am not talking about the magenta...I know that is my route if I am navigating in that mode.

and I am not talking about the red and yellow coding while in traffic map mode...I understand that refers to the severity of the traffic on particular roads.

but when in normal map mode, especially in 3D mode (thought it may be true in 2D as well), with no route selected, why are some streets different colors?

it seems that major roadways has something to do with the colors, but what I would like to know, is it interstates one color, state routes another, surface streets no color, etc.

can someone clue me in?

Excellent question as Garmin doesn't do much for documentation no matter the cost of the Nuvi model!!

Map colors

That is a good question.

From my observation, red signifies interstates, the yellow sigifies major surface streets usually controlled by traffic lights and the white indicate normal suburban residential neigbourhood streets. I don't think the Garmin units differentiate between state routes and major surface streets.

Color codes on roads on the map

From my use of the GPS in the monitor mode is Red means Interstate Highway, yellow indicates a primary route off the Interstate while white is definitely a secondary road or street.

Doing a lot of back country driving, the roads displayed as yellow change depending on the area. It can be a primary road such as a federal highway, state route, main street through town, or a preferred route through rural areas. I've had "white" roads change to yellow when we take a turnoff to "see where this one goes."

Changes

Has anyone noticed if the colors change with the zoom level?

Nuvi 750 and 755T

...

The color of the road should not be changing with the zoom level. I have never seen this on any of my units.

Red

Red is actually Limited Access, it is not restricted to Interstate. Look here, 37.632746°, -78.995430°, you will see this is an example of Limited Access.

Good question, numbers too?

I was wondering the same thing, good topic.

With traffic displaying, I also noticed some numbers coming up too next to the roads - small and "sideways" if I remember correctly. Do the numbers specify the speed that the high area traffic has slowed down to or ???

Color-coded street segments

Interesting question. I think the white roads denote neighborhood streets. Red=interstate, and yellow = major streets.
