765T remains powered and fully functional by USB cable?

from my research prior to buying my 765T, I thought that I had read that you can't use your nuvi while it is connected to your PC via the USB cable.
that it will only charge while connected, or you can use Poi Loader, Web Updater, sites that support the Communicator plugin etc.
well, this morning, after I uploaded some info with Poi Loader, I did the usual XP safely remove USB device routine, and I got the little ding sound indicating that the device was no longer connected to the PC.
however, I left the USB cable ATTACHED, and the 765T left USB mode, and started up normally.
when I pulled the USB cable, I got the same message I get when I shut down power to the cradle in my car by turning off the ignition (my CR-V cig lighter powers off when the ignition switch is off)...the 765T stated that power had been removed and asked if I wanted to turn off or stay on.
while connected like this, there is no battery power indicator showing at the top by the time.
as soon as I pull the USB cable, and say stay on, the battery indicator shows up.
is this something new to the 7X5 series?
do other nuvis operate the same way?

760 Doesn't
My 760 doesn't, however there is a way to do this in the Tips and Tricks.

.
my 750 doesn't act that way either. While it's plugged into the computer, it's locked from doing anything except loading/unloading via the computer.
When I unplug it, it boots up normally.

765 Charging
My 765 is kinda touchy when plugged into the USB port. I have to be careful of the cylindrical filter thingy on the cord that it's not putting too much downward pressure. I didn't really seem to have this problem with the 755.
