Questions regarding SD card.
#1: What data can/should/should-not be stored to the SD card?
#2: When writing to the SD card, does the card need to be in the GPS or does it need to be in a card reader?
#3: Will data on the card be automatically read by the GPS?
Thanks,

I recently purchased a Nuvi 265W. In order to put custom POI's on the device, I have to use Garmin POI loader. If I put a csv.format file on the device using Windows Explorer, The device doesn't see the points. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks,
100% agree with you!

Garmin manual is really bad! And the folks here are really smart and very helpful! Thanks.

The POI loader, as I understand it,
puts all of the CVS files in either the SD card or Garmin unit (which ever you select) as one file named "poi.gpi". That's the file the Garmin reads not just the cvs formated file. Others can probably provide more detail. Suggest you read some of the great info at Gary's site -- http://home.comcast.net/~ghayman3/garmin.gps/index.html

You MUST use POI Loader to LOAD the Custom POIs to the GPS unit or the SD card.
Copying the data files directly to the unit or to the SD card or to the GPS unit will NOT work.
Use poi loader

Thanks,
Make a folder on your desktop and put all your csv files in it. Then point the POI LOADER to that folder. After loading your files will be in Where To / Extras / Custom Pois.

Use poi loader
HES RIGHT YOU NEED TO USE THE POI LOADER YOU CAN'T JUST MOVE THE FILES TO THE SD CARD THE GARMIN WILL NOT READ IT AFTER YOU USE THE POI LOADER LOOK UNDER EXTRAS THEN CUSTOM POI AND IT WILL SHOW YOU WHAT YOU ADDED

Supplemental maps and new Favorites can go on card.
I have not tried to see if nuvi will automatically read POI's from a card (in \Garmin\POI\ folder). But it might if you used poiloader to put them on the card.
Supplemental maps can be on a card (\Garmin\gmapsupp.img). However, they might not work if anything else on the card, or part of that mapset is already in main memory.
A nuvi will automatically read favorites in GPX files in \Garmin\GPX\ folder on the card if they have not be read before (Google Maps, Mapquest, or previous Current.GPX under a different name. I confirmed that by saving to GPS (SD on PC without GPS connected) from Google Maps. Those waypoints showed up when inserted into nuvi. However, maps on the card stopped working until I deleted the GPX folder on the card.
Not sure what else it will read from same path/format as main memory. For units capable of multipoint routing, routes in a GPX file would need to be imported to the nuvi using My Data menu.

Writing to your SD card...
If you have a card reader built into your computer, or attached to it, and you know it's USB 2.0, use that -- most of the Garmin devices run at older, slower USB 1.1 speeds.
This can make a big difference if you're trying to move a few hundred megabytes of music and/or audiobooks on to your new 2gb SD card!
