POIs in a database?

Any thoughts on creating a POI database in addition to hosting individual files?

When I am traveling, there are many POI files I am interested in and it would be nice to select a location (like a state or multiple states) and then select various kinds of POIs and extract only those. It would be easier for me, as a user, to manage by selecting by geography by topic instead of only by topic.

Excellent idea, but a little bit too much to expect from this kind of a site, I think.

The time to create such a thing would be prohibitive......as would the time required to maintain it.
