Can map software be changed?

I recently bought a nuvi 350 and I am curious if different maps can be loaded into the unit. For example, could I load Streets and Trips or Google maps or any other mapping software inot the unit instead of City Navigator? Also, in old threads I came across some discussions regarding nRoute. Can it be used with a nuvi 350? I apologize if these topics have been covered before but after going through pages of old threads I have found the answers.

Why load Google maps or S&T?

The Garmin/Naveteq mapset is pretty good - at least I don't think Google maps or S&T are any better. With the Nuvi, you can or will soon with a upcoming firmware upgrade, be able to load Garmin's topographic maps into a Nuvi if you want to.

nRoute and Mapsource are software that are run on your PC. nRoute duplicates the functionality of the software that you are currently running on your Nuvi (City Navigator v8). Do a search on Mapsource to see how you might be able to obtain it free of charge from Garmin. You need Mapsource to use nRoute.

The reason I ask is simply

The reason I ask is simply because I want to play around a little. I have fully backed up my nuvi 350 so I am not worried about losing functionality as I can always revert back to the City Navigator maps. I am curious as to what this thing is capable of.

Secondly, I know how to obtain a mpasource DVD. I have an iQue 3600 and I am familiar with the process. My question about nRoute was merely to see if the nuvi can be used merely as a gps receiver for a pc (notebook). IE, can I use the map loaded on my computer and my computer screen and use the nuvi only to obtain the gps signals and provide location information? Again, this is merely to play around. I like seeing what things can do. Thanks for the help!

Not sure about the Nuvi, but with my c530, I cannot use it with the PC as it is only seen as a drive.

Funny you mentioned you had an iQue 3600. I was approached today by a guy from work, he has an iQue 3600 for sale... $200 ... Is it worth it?

I used to have a 3600 and would bet that the battery is done on the one that was offered to you. That is the 3600 weak point. I won't pay 50 bucks for a 3600.

iQue 3600

He actually bought two awhile back and is selling one of them.
The guy is selling off stuff, his daughter has been on the transplant list, and they are just scraping by due to med bills, car insurance about to lapse etc. They are in dire straights financially speaking. He's the type that just won't take charity. I suppose even if it is junk, I could still donate to his family and him not feel too bad, and I'd feel ok doing it as well.

3600

Is an iQue 3600 worth $200? That depends on the situation. If it is used the batteries are probably shot. I bought my iQue 3600 a few months ago for $50 and the batteries are shot. If you want to use it merely as a gps in a vehicle then that doesn't matter as it will be plugged in to your vehicle's power. The iQue has some nice feature that I wish my Nuvi had. The iQue will display nearest address information as you drive. I really wish my Nuvi had that feature. Also, the iQue will show all preloaded POIs at a much lesser zoom than my Nuvi. That is also nice because you can zoom out and get a quick idea of what is around you visually before you use the find tool.

So no one knows if other maps can be loaded onto a Nuvi? Oh well, it was worth a shot.

All I know

Is that an announcement was made at CES back in January that the entire Nuvi line would soon accept Garmin's US-Topo & BlueChart cartography - no work on timeline.

3600

Here is some more info on the iQue that I did not mention above. The iQue is a PDA. You can upload all of your contacts from Outlook or other programs. It can store files and do all kinds of non-GPS stuff. Even with bad batteries I have found that turning the screen brightness down will significantly lengthen battery life. Overall, I really like the iQue. You can download a manual from garmins website and give it a quick read for more details on all the different functions it will perform.

I've loaded the entire state of colorado topo map sets on my nuvi's SD card, and they look great and seem to be working fine. SW ver 2.70

Maybe for camping or Hiking

I own the IQ360. It is a great PDA for that price, however the prices have probably dropped big time sense I purchased it. As far as a car GPS goes, it really sucks compared to the technology available today. Many times it would take me 15 minutes to get reception, and I would loose it on and off. However, it does work great for a camping trip or something. You can save your current location where you start the trip, that way you can find your way back incase you get lost. I really enjoy it for camping and hiking.

battery on iq3600

Is there a way to charge or change the battery? Mine's gone completely dead...won't even turn on.
