Converting file types for use on nuvi ...

I was sent some files that describe the boundries of "Walk-In Hunting" areas in South Dakota. The zipfile contains *.shp files. There is also a link to a link to a program called DNRGarmin that is supposed to allow uploading to my nuvi.

I haven't made much progress yet. My goal is to set alerts so that as I cross a boundary of a walk-in area the GPSr will alert me to that area. (I currently have several other POI alerts functioning.)

Can someone point me in the correct direction to learn how to utilize these files. The info in these files will be very useful to me. Thank you for any help.

Shape File

That file is a "shape" file and contains a list of coordinates that describe an area.

In order to get "alerts", you would have to disect the file, and load each coordinate pair into a POI file and load it with POI loader with alerts set.

Way too much work, and there isn't any guarantee that it will work.

It looks like you might be able to convert the shapefiles to GPX file with ExpertGPS.

However, it's important to understand that Garmin Custom POI alerts do not work as a "boundary" line. They are discrete points. Therefore, you would likely need to create a very large number of points along each of the boundary lines. And even then the results might be spotty. I would test it with with a short segment before doing all of it.

Thanks for the reply MM. Last spring I found a POI file on this site (I believe) that is for timezones. I have it loaded and alerts are active. My GPSr alerts me when I cross into a new timezone. I was hoping to be able to approximate that. The program that was included is described here - http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/mis/gis/tools/arcview/extensions/...

TimeZones

I haven't used the timezones file but if you read the description it says that they just plotted points on highways that cross timezones. They don't actually plot the entire timezone line.

In order to create a boundary line you would have to plot lots of points to create a line, as MM indicated.
