Garmin gpi format poi files on Zumo

My Garmin Zumo contains a directory named "Garmin", in this directory POI loader loads the POI file with a gpi extension and there are also files I assume from Garmin itself with that extension like CyclopsUK082906Sample.gpi.

Is there a software with which I could convert back these files and edit them on my PC, e.g. to correct some errors I detected ?

I don't know about the other .gpi sample files you have, but the POI.gpi is constructed from the POI's you upload. There is no way to edit the built in POI's within the unit, as they are only updated by Garmin along with the maps.

If you wanted to edit the POI's you are loading, the best way would be from the original .csv or .gpx files. The .gpx can be changed to a .csv file through the program POI-EDIT (see FAQ's). The .csv file can be opened in Wordpad or Excel, editied, and then resaved and reloaded onto your Zumo.

I was able to force Wordpad to open the .gpi file and see the text with a lot of other characters. Don't know if you can edit it, however it is useful to examine the contents. To force open the file, select the .gpi file and then select "Open with" and choose your text editor.

Not sure if this answered your question.

CyclopsUK082906Sample.gpi

If you have a look in that particular file (with Notepad), you will see, right at the beginning "UK Aug-30-2006 Safety Camera Database Copyright © 2006 Cyclops UK Limited." -- it's a sample of the official Garmin (subscription-based) Speed-camera database. You will also see "GRMREC01" whereas most .GPI files have "GRMREC00". When you subscribe to the Garmin service, it updates this file and you get a corresponding ".UNL" file -- ie "GRMREC01" files are ENCRYPTED. [It's a novel concept, I know ... secret Points-of-interest...]

Some work has been done on deciphering the more normal "GRMREC00" files , but I don't believe any software has been produced (yet) that reads them.

Thank you for the answers, that clarified a few things to me.
