POI Factory plans

Later this week, I plan to upgrade the site's web platform to a newer version. Once everything is ready for the upgrade, I'll need to schedule an hour or two of downtime to move it onto the web server. I'll post a note when everything is ready to go.

Initially, there won't be a lot of visibile changes, but it will pave the way to make further improvments over the rest of the year. Here are some of the areas I expect to work on after the upgrade is in place:

  • Team workspaces focused around POI types and local areas (to facilitate collaboration on POI projects)
  • Reorganized forum areas / ability to exclude forums from your list of unread posts
  • Upload and share pictures (for POI types & GPS models)
  • Import from GPX into the POI Factory database
  • Choose format to download from the POI Factory Database (CSV, GPX, OV2, etc.)

I'm always open to feedback and suggestions for improving the site. Please feel free to share your ideas.

Looking forward to the new changes and options. I guess being sick for several days gave you plenty of time to think of new challenges and solutions for the website.

Robin I heard that job is already being done by you ! Haha say how is the Mio working for you? Has the mapping been updated yet? If Mio used the latest Navteq I'd like one then. The roads in my area change quite often so updates are important to me.

Suggestion

  • JM

Would you be able to make a function for something like favorite posts? I read some great posts on how to do something (like make a file) but once I read them, I lose the location and it's hard to go back to find them to reference them again. That would be really cool! Thanks for all your hard work!

Not I - I got the windows, not the trash!

Mio Maps are supposed to come out April 7th, but I'm not holding my breath. For $149, I'm buying an extra one "just in case", if I could ever find one when they weren't sold out!

JM, Great ideas at work. My

    JM,

Great ideas at work. My compliments to you and Miss POI.

Regarding "Team workspaces focused around POI types and local areas (to facilitate collaboration on POI projects)" I'd like to suggest a Motorcycle catagory (team workspace). I've been quite active on a Zumo forum and there are many others there looking for info on Motorcycle related poi's and tourguide stuff. Unfortunatly, that forum doesn't provide an easy way to share files and data. I'm sure there would be several folks who would like to band together here to contribute.

Additionally, have you thought about the possibility of route sharing here as well. To us motorcyclists good routes are every bit as important as good POI's. Not wanting to direct your site in another direction, just wondering if you had plans for or had considered this.

    Thanks again,

    TerrySC

    Progress Report

Pretty good progress so far this week --

I've updated the site's custom programs to work with the newer web platform. I still need to test everything together to make sure there won't be any conflicts.

If I don't run into any major snags with testing, we should be able to upgrade the live site early next week.

Once we're on the newer web platform, I'll be able to start work on the improvements mentioned earler in this discussion topic.

Thank you all for sharing your ideas and support.

New maps that would make the Mio very enticing to me. I'd buy one but my wife wouldn't be happy if bought yet another technogadget! What I want next is a garmin handheld such as a 60Cx,Venture Cx or anything that is compatible with City Navigator NT that way I can navigate, geocache and hike with one gps.

The site is looking great JM. I really like the quote feature in the forums.. very helpful to see who is replying to whom. Another idea would to make any post we enter become a "high interest" to that user. If you could make it so those posts could be floated to the top of the list we could better keep track of replies or perhaps notifying us when a reply has been posted to our posts (if that makes sense).
    Thanx,
    Ray
