Problems with XM Radio in StreetPilot 2730

I have a StreetPilot 2730 with an external antenna for the XM Radio that plugs into the back. For the past few months, the unit has been displaying messages such as "XM Disconnected" or "Device Not Supported", even though the antenna is correctly plugged in. Whenever this happens, I usually have to unplug and replug the antenna, or turn the unit off and on in order to get the XM radio working.

Has anyone else had this problem? I would like to know if the problem is with the antenna or the Street Pilot.

Dave, I have a 2730 which came with the XM receiver antenna.

It is a GXM-30. Is that what you have ?

To my knowledge, that is the only XM antenna that is compatible with the 2730.

I have not have any problems or messages such as you mentioned. Other than the XM service sucking wind, it functions.

Dave, I have a 2730 but only use the XM NavTraffic function and have not had any problems at all.

Yes, my XM antenna is the GXM-30 that came with the StreetPilot - I don't think any other antennas or devices are compatible, even if they have the same type of USB plug.

I should clarify that my XM radio does function *most* of the time, it's just that the errors I described happen often enough to be rather annoying. I already have to deal with the occasional signal fade-out that occurs when I drive through a valley with tall trees near the road(there are two such places on my drive to and from work). At least when that happens, the radio refreshes itself once it has a clear view of the sky.

mabe the merger will help you down the road?

As I recall, XM provides digital programming directly from two high-powered satellites in geostationary orbit above the equator: XM Rhythm at 115° west longitude and XM Blues at 85° west longitude in addition to a network of ground-based repeaters. The combination of two satellites and a ground-based repeater network is designed to provide gap-free coverage anywhere within the continental U.S., while SIRIUS has three satellites in high-angle elliptical orbits over the U.S. These orbits ensure the highest angle of elevation and a more direct signal from our satellites to subscribers, no matter where they are in the continental United States.

This Makes XM line of site if your not in range of a FM repeater, which by they way seems to be your problem when your down in the valleys or even parked between two houses and not in range of the FM repeater.

NEW YORK, NY – July 29, 2008 –SIRIUS Satellite Radio (NASDAQ: SIRI) and XM Satellite Radio today announced that they have completed their merger, resulting in the nation’s premier radio company. The new company plans to change its corporate name to Sirius XM Radio Inc. The combined company’s stock will continue to be traded on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the symbol “SIRI”.

Maybe the merger will fix your problem down the road, You can only hope.

I myself was one of the first 100 subscribers to Sirius Radio, and was rewarded with a lifetime subscription after making only two monthly payments for being a charter sub. and also given 100 shares of Sirius, I guess the 100's collate.

Dave,I'm new on the board

Dave,

I'm new on the board and just saw your message. I have two 2730's, both with GXM-30's attached. One in my car and one on my Touring motorcycle (Honda Goldwing). I have had similar problems to what you are experiencing. I have found usually (more recently) that the GXM-30 connector was not fully seated into the 2730. You may also want to check and make sure the connectors are clean.

When I received my 2730 when they first came out I had problems with the GXM-30 being recognized or the 2730 was unable to "Boot" while the GXM-30 was plugged in.

I'd have to unpluge the GXM-30, turn the 2730 on and then plug the GXM-30 in after the 2730 was running. Garmin guickly sent out updates to the Unit software I was running or I would back rev the Unit software until Garmin released a fix. There have been no problems like this in quite awhile with the unit software.

My suggestion, if you have not already done it, would be to load the most current 2730 Unit software from Garmin. Then see if your problems continue.

Thanks for the info. Per Garmin's website, the latest update for the 2730 was released in January 2008. I'm pretty sure I updated my unit this year, but I'll give it a try again. I'll also take a closer look at the GXM-30 connector (that's where I suspected the problem was).

New problem - Garmin won't power on while GXM 30 is plugged in!

For the past month, whenever I turn on my StreetPilot 2730 while the GXM 30 antenna (used for XM radio) is plugged in, the initial start-up screens appear for about 5-10 seconds, but then the unit turns off for about 1/2 second, and then tries to start up again. This doesn't happen EVERY time (the XM radio worked fine last Thursday and Friday), but it has been occurring more often than not. If the GXM 30 is unplugged, the StreetPilot starts up fine, but then if I plug in the GXM 30 while the StreetPilot is on, the unit turns off and goes through the cycle I described above.

I have the latest software (January 2008), and I've checked the connections - there doesn't appear to be any problems. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Problems with XM Radio in StreetPilot 2730

For whatever it is worth, I had intermittent power problems with my Garmin StreetPilot 2730 last year. I contacted Garmin support and they shipped me out a replacement power cord free of charge.

I'll call them up

Thanks, I'll call them up and see if they do the same thing for me. (Although I think the problem is with the antenna, since the unit works fine as long as the antenna is not plugged in.)

2730 glitch fix

Turn off unit, hold down map and menu buttons and turn unit back on. Don't release buttons until the garmin logo appears and is steady without flashes or other weird things. Unit will reset and should work properly. This fixed both of the problems you mentioned for me. It does erase your xm radio presets, but at least it works! An XM tech guy told me to do this when I called a year or two ago about the "turn on, go off" problem. Hope this helps you. -Mike Fenton

I had tried this already, and it didn't work

Thanks, Mike. Unfortunately, I had already tried this a few times, and it didn't fix the problem. (The Garmin help desk told me how to reset the unit using the method you described.) For me, it's a moot point, since I decided to buy a separate XM radio. We were going on a long road-trip from MD to FL and back (which we just returned from yesterday), so I wanted to have a functioning XM radio available for the 2,000+ mile drive. The radio cost only $80 and there was no charge to transfer the radio ID on my account, although it's not as convenient as having a radio built in to the StreetPilot.

One thing I'm wondering - did you have your GXM30 antenna plugged in when you reset your StreetPilot? I can't remember if I did that or not.

GXM-30 intermittenty "XM disconnected" status messages

I had the same problem with my StreetPilot 2730. The problem was intermittent at first then finally failed. The problem turned out to be a broken wire inside the cable just before it entered the GXM-30 antenna. I found it by wiggling portions of the antenna wire (work/fail) until I found the location of the break. By cutting the antenna wire shorter and reconnecting it inside the GXM-30 receiver took care of my problem.
