Not Impressed with ver 4.2 for Nuvi 7XX

After reading all the positive comments about 4.2, I finally upgraded.
I'm not impressed. Sure it's better than 4.0 and 4.1, but I still see map lag problems.
The vehicle icon is always behind. I pass intersections and about 2-3 seconds later the vehicle icon is just approaching the intersection, I just passed. When I turn at an intersection, the vehicle icon is still showing me at the intersection for several seconds, then tries to catch up.
I have an excellent signal (16ft accuracy),
even tried a hard reset.
This is the unit I receved as a replacement for my broken bluetooth. I was told they would send me a new unit, which I'm pretty sure it is. It came with ver 3.2 installed on it.
In my opinion ver 2.90 worked the best, no problems at all. It's been downhill ever since. I don't know what the software engineers are trying to accomplish. They took a perfectly good ver and broke it with ver 3.0 and above.
oh well, just my 2 cents.

Thank you for the post..

I also exchanged a 760 after it was trashed during the 4.10 fiasco, for a 770 which came with 3.20 installed. I then reverted back to 2.90 and the only problem I notice is an occasional stutter... I like you after reading the posts regarding 4.2 was tempted to update, but after reading your post, I'm back to my original thinking, if it isn't broke, why fix it...

I think if you have updated to 4.0 or 4.1 you should install 4.2 otherwise I would stick with 2.90….

Another 2 cents…. rolleyes

I too upgraded from 3.1 to 4.2 and found a delay in the remapping after I turn a corner. While not perfect it is something I can live with since my eyes on on the road making the turn and not on the unit.
I still have the download of 2.9, 3.0, and 3.1 on my computer but reading the comments here don't want to attempt going back. That's life and my 2 cents worth.

Same situation here. I returned a broken Bluetooth 760 (due to backdating from 4.10) for a NIB 760 which came with 3.20. I have not backdated nor updated since everything is working beautifully.

What advantage would 2.90 have over 3.20 that would compel me to backdate if I decide to do so?

While it is not "normally" possible to backdate, there is still a way to do it if you know how. If you have a 760, backdating down from 4.xx to 3.xx or below WILL break Bluetooth on the unit and it will need to be sent to Garmin for repair/replacement.

Tried to find a link to backdate to 2.9, can you help?

If you are satisfied with the way your gps is functioning I would see no reason to change it. I was having a problem with the unit freezing occasionally while navigating and I had to turn the unit off and then after re-starting re-enter the destination, the 2.90 version doesn't seem to have that problem...

Garmin is aware of the map redraw delay during voice prompt

I talked with a "Advanced Product Certified Automotive Technical Support" person at Garmin last Friday about the map redraw delay during the voice navigation prompt. I heard back from him again today and they are working on that problem right now along with the route optimization problem. As of today they have not solved them.

I can understand a delay if a voice prompt is occuring, but I see the map delay without a voice prompt. I'm already past an intersection and the gps still looks like I'm coming to it. Like originally stated, about a 3-4 second delay.

It all depends on where you look. The icon that is superimposed on the map is a fixed scale and does not adjust its size when the map zooms in and out. That's why I use the center of the icon for my point of reference, as the zoom factor greatly impacts the graphical indication of the vehicle relative to the location. If you train your eye to look at the center, it's fine.

Had 2 other Brand GPS

I have had 2 other GPS (Magellans 4200,4260) that do the same thing!! maybe it's just the way these things work. I have even talk with the Buick dealership on their in dash GPS (I was interrested in install factory verse non factory) and that is the most common complaint, that and the arrival notice not on target. These GPS are far better than mapquesting. We drive about a 100 miles a day in both truck (A/C Contractor) and it has been a dream since we got the Nuvi760.

Please i need help.
I just got the Garmin nuvi 750 today and it works gorgeously for my 1st GPS. The voice is so clean and loud, the functions are easy to manipulate and alter, and the tools and settings were designed brilliantly. However, I'm from Maryland and today I decided to put in an address from Alexandria, VA to add it as a favorite. The address i put in was changed completely and the zip code wasn't the same...also my own address doesn't come up on my map. (example: i put in 552 maple ct, Alexandria VA 22311 and 3900 cook st, Alexandria, VA 22314 came up) any solutions?

If the street isn't in the data file it can't find it...

This usually happens with new streets or addresses but not always. For your home location set it while you are at home...

So if I am attempting to

So if I am attempting to travel to that location I set and it doesn't show the correct address there is nothing i can do? It honestly took what i put in and put a generic address in there in the same state and city tho.

You could try an intersection...

I'm not sure how what you are saying can happen... I haven't been able to find some addresses because I entered the incorrect city, but I've never had my gps give me a generic address... That sounds more like something a geodecoder does, when it can't find what you are looking for it may give you the just the street or city....

Is Maple Ct a new Street?
When I try the example you listed, I get choices of Maple St, Maple Hill Pl, Maple Tree Ct, Maplefield Pl, and Maplewood Pl.
If it's a new Street it may not be included in the latest MAP. Even with 2009 maps, they're sometimes 2-3 years behind.

check

check your recently found file on the 750 to double check that you did infact find the first address. You may not be entering the addresses correctly, I know it has happened to me before.

and the only Maple Ct that came up was in Falls Church, VA. That doesn't appear to be far from Alexandria, VA... But it didn't find the street number just the street....

lol thanks alot. how did u find such coordinates?
oh and it says that the current version is 2.80 i was wondering should i update to the current 4.20?

I would update to v3.1...

@JayBay15

v4.2 still has some lingering issues. v3.1 seems to be the most stable while still being current. v4.x adds nothing really significant to compel me to update my 750(v3.1) & 760(v3.2) units.

To update to v3.1 visit the following site to download the direct update file (WebUpdater not needed):
http://www.gpsinformation.org/perry/nuvi/

Then in order to STAY at v3.1 and still be able to run WebUpdater to check for other updates (like GPS chipset, traffic receiver & voice updates), do the following:

1. Run WebUpdater & allow it to install the newest unit software (firmware) version & check for additional updates.

2. After WebUpdater has completed updating & BEFORE rebooting the nuvi, find the file GUPDATE.GCD located in x:/Garmin (where x is the drive letter assigned to your nuvi's internal storage drive) and delete it BEFORE disconnecting and rebooting your nuvi. Your nuvi is not actually updated until it is rebooted and has the GUPDATE.GCD file in the appropriate place on the unit. If you delete the file, no update will occur.

@Dorkus
Are we able to down grade after upgrading?

And the kind poster above me gave me coordinates...but foolishly, i Dunno how to put them in and it wasn't specified if it was North/South East/West.

@JayBay15

You normally/officially cannot backdate from 4.x to 3.x. There -is- an obscure way to accomplish this but doing so will permanently break all Bluetooth functions on those units that have it. Updating the unit back up to 4.x will not fix it either & it will need to be sent to Garmin for repair/replacement.

Problem Replicated

I was able to replicate the same issue on my 750. At first, I thought you may have an older map installed (which you may), but I have v2009.

To check your map version:
Tools > Settings > Map > Map Info >> It should say 2009 in the description.

As for entering coords:
Where To > Down arrow > Coordinates

Click Format and choose the 3rd option. That's how the POIs deal with coords - you'll get used to it. If the longitude is negative, it's West.

Click the boxes where the numbers display to enter the appropriate coords.

The coords I found (38.809786, -77.042798) for the Cook St address were a little different that the ones aophiuchus provided - since you know the area, use the most accurate set.

That said, assuming you're on the Cook St that's between N Pitt and N Royal, it's not in the v2009 GPS map. sad

This appears to be true in 2D mode but lag still exists in 3D...

V 4.0 broke mine but Garmin gave me refurbish

Like the rest of you V4.0 broke my Nuvi 760. I tried 4.10 and 4.20 and I still had the lagging car.

I got garmin on the phone and since I still had 1 month left on my warranty they swapped it out for another one. The new unit came with 4.0 installed but it didn't have the lagging car issue.

I've updated to the latest V4.20 and it still works fine. I'm a happy Garmin person.

I wonder if this has anything to do with map redraw, and not related to GPS position accuracy. I get this kind of delay all the time when I slow down to a stop or wait at a light, but once the car starts to move, the map will display the correct position information as long as I am not surrounded by skyscrapers.
