Garmin Nuvi SMS text message support

Has anyone found a working combination of a bluetooth cell phone displaying/sending text messages with your Nuvi?

I get a lot of 'work related' text messages that I would like to be able to see with my Nuvi while driving...

Same here, I would love for

Same here, I would love for the SMS function to cooperate.

My 680 does not work with my blackberry 8830.

Garmin's website has a 'compatibilty checker' for SMS text messages, It looks like the 8830 is not supported.

I'm looking through Garmin's list, it appears the RAZR V3 is one phone that will work. Anyone have one that can try it?

Larry

Yes

My nuvi 660 is paired with an older Nokia 6102i. I can both receive and send text msgs from my 660. In fact, when I display either a sent or received text msg, there is the option to press a button and the TTS voice will read the message out loud through the speaker.

680 and MotoRazr V3r work great!

I've never tried to send a text via the Nuvi, but I received one the other day, and I forget what the button said (similar to the "incoming call: answer/ignore), but I pushed the button, and was floored when Karen (TTS) read the message to me!

Typing a message is a little strange since my 660 doesn't have a QWERTY keyboard, but it does work. And, yes, Karen reads the messages out loud, although sometimes her pronunciation is a little off. wink

Hmmmmmmm...

I have a 760 and my phone seems to work well with it - it pushes the phone book to the nüvi just fine - but I don't see anything related to text messaging on the GPS. Is there a special screen or button that appears if you have that capability?

Just checked the list on Garmin's site. My phone is too new and isn't even listed at all. It's a Motorola V750.

The GF's 360 works fine with text messages... She has one of the razors..
Even the voice dialing works well..

On the other hand..text messages are for 12 year girls with pink phones.
Sorry..text messages are, in my opinion, one of the greatest inflictions forced upon mankind. How tapping messages out on a phonepad isnt considered H@ll is beyond me.. grin

Continuing..what WOULD be nice would be real EMAIL.
If my blackberry's email could connect via BT to my nuvi..THAT would sweet.

I'd rather see the Nuvi use the Blackberry data connection for enhanced GPS services on the Nuvi - like gas prices, weather, traffic, etc.

Thanks for the laugh smile My company decided it was better to assign jobs via text messages, that way there are no missed phone calls, misinterpreted messages, etc... At a recent meeting, we complained it was too hard to text lengthy messages. He responded that we should 'hire a teenager to train the old guys'.

I will repeat the comment about 12 YO girls with pink phones to my boss when I see him next!

About getting email displayed on your Nuvi... If you forward your email to your SMS cell phone, you can read it on your Nuvi. A list of provider addresses to forward your email to is here:

RAZR V3 with SMS

Is your phone on the Verizon network? I just bought a RAZR V3, works very well with my 780 but will not display text messages. I even updated the RAZR firmware and have my 780 at 4.2... The pairing works fine, it downloads the phonebook but will not do anything when I receive a text message (and I cant see an option to send one).

Is there something additional I need to set up, or is this another problem with Verizon phones being 'crippled' of their features?

Larry

Verizon

Good question regarding Verizon. They are well known to cripple features that are built into their phones so they can sell you a "service" to do it instead.

If you are a bit of a techie you could check out http://www.howardforums.com/

There you will find folks who can tell you how to take your crippled Verizon phone and replace the firmware with the original, out of the box, firmware with all the features enabled, and then still have it work on the Verizon network.

It is NOT illegal to do (no illegal info allowed on this site) but it WILL void your Verizon warranty. Of course, the same folks also tell you how to restore your phone to "Verizon condition" if you want to do so.

Again, be aware that you will have to do some reading and be a bit of a techie in order to do this. I'm a bit of a techie myself but have only made one, minor, mod to my V750 in order to turn off a feature I don't use in order to extend my battery charge. If I was a phone geek you can bet I'd do a lot of stuff but I really just use my phone for ---(GASP!!!)--- phone calls. surprised

Nuvi 780

Since the ill-fated update on the 7xx series, Bluetooth has continued to have problems. I use a Motorola Razr V3, and according to garmins list of compatible phones, this one is fully supported. Well, that isn’t quite true. AT&T is my service, and far as I know, they’ve not made any changes. I also have used bluetooh on my other Nuvi’s without incident. The 780 will send and receive, but will not display any history from the phone. It says it’s syncing with the phone, the hour glass spins and nothing happens. My old cell phone, a Sony Ericsson, Z520A worked just fine. I’m going to change sim cards and see if the Sony will work again on the 780.

780 Bluetooth

Well. The Sony continues to work fine with the Nuvi. It correctly displays all text messages, sent and received. It also displays the calls made and received in the correct order. When using the Razr, it lists the calls in revere order. So far, no ‘fix’ from Garmin, although i must confess, this is not the most important function of the Nuvi for me. I do use the Bluetooth for the phone, and aside from the calls being reversed, it performs fine. Voice calling or using the phone hook or calling a POI number is no problem, and in coming calls are no problem.

Some questions...
Does the text message pop up on the screen as it is received? How do you send a text message, is it a touch menu on the screen?

My RAZR displays the calls in the correct order, so I wonder if the problem is firmware on the phone... On your RAZR, look at settings, system, device info, other information, s/w version.

PDA Support

Does anybody know how to make Windows Mobile device SMS compatible. I believe this is only software issue.

SMS texting on your GPSr just another reason to ban them!

Text messaging via a GPS?
Just another reason why cell phones should be outlawed from cars. we all know what happened with texting and a train engineer don't we, and he couldn't even flounder left or right. All he did was blow through a red. do you really want that on your hands?

Turn your phone off when in your car driving, thats what voice mail is all about, then you can collect them when stopped.

But then how will those people feel important if they can't talk or text on their cell phone while driving?

Jill, can you please read me this message?

I get my work instructions via text pages... It sure would be nice to have Jill read them to me, or at least have them on a larger screen than my cell phone.

I do agree, texting/dialing/distractions while driving is not in anyone's best interest.

I have had phones in my cars for over 30 years

I have had phones in my cars for over 30 years. In all those years I have never been involved in a accident or have I gotten a ticket. My first car phone had trunk mounted equipment with a handset in the car in a 1976 cadillac seville.

I was a contractor driving in town between 35,000-40,000 mile a year. I had multiple jobsites and I quickly learned it was a valuable tool when someone needed to catch me before I was clear on the other side of town. For people that spend a lot of time in their cars it can be invaluable and save you both a lot of time and fuel. The trick is to learn to use it when it is safe and not use it when it is not needed.

I think it would have been great if I could have received a text message and had it read to me by a GPS like can be done today. People forget that we all use to carry beepers and people were trying to read the message that had come in while driving all the time.

I cannot begin to guess how many people I have seen driving in the morning rush hour while eating their breakfast or putting on their makeup and doing their hair which to me seems a lot more distracting than talking on a hands free phone or listening to a text message being read while driving.
