I have a Nuvi 760 just purchased in September. Note, there is no Traffic service available where I live. In none of the screens in Tools, or Settings does there appear any references to Traffic. Nor in the About screen is there any reference to traffic.
I do have the power cord with the traffic receiver in it, (two LED indicators on the plug). Does one have to be in an area where traffic is available for any reference to Traffic to show up?
Yes
If you are in an area where traffic service is abailable, you will see traffic indication on the main screen, when there are traffic issues.
Yeahbut
Yeahbut, howcome no Traffic Tab in Tools? Howcome no Traffic Version in the About Pages?

Traffic Receiver
You should have a traffic icon on the main screen (the one that shows Where to, View map, etc.) and on the tools menu when the traffic receiver is plugged in, even though you live in an area without traffic coverage. In addition, it should show the traffic receiver firmware version on the about screen.(My Nuvi 660 shows one, anyway, and I live in an area where traffic is not available; your 760 should be similar.) If not, you may have a bad traffic receiver. Do you have a green LED and an orange LED showing on the traffic receiver? If not, what colors are the LEDs?
LEDs
Only the green LED lights when connected. The second LED for the FM receiver doesn't light.
So I guess I should contact Garmin about a replacement cord.
Thanks

not no phast, phranc...
I really doubt your cord is somehow "bad". You have to be in an area (you said you were not) where the traffic info is actually being broadcast for the traffic receiver to detect it, lock onto the FM signal, light the green LED and display that info on the nuvi. If no traffic info is being received, the second LED will not light.

Well,
That's what I said in the first place. I have no Traffic Support in this area. That being said, I still should see Traffic under Tools>Settings. I also should see what version of Traffic Software is installed. Nothing shows.
I would have to drive over a 100 miles for the nearest area with Traffic to see if it is working.

look on pages 32 and 33 of the 760 owner's manual for info
If the power supply traffic receiver is plugged into an active live plug in and connected to the cradle the unit should turn on and you should be seeing the information even if no traffic signal is available. Look at tools>settings>traffic. You should also see the firmware information on the same screen as the unit firmware is shown.
The lights, connections and blink codes are shown on pages 32 and 33 of the 760 owner's manual.

I've Looked
Twice I've said, there is no Traffic under Tools>Settings. I've also said there is no Traffic info on the Screen with the Firmware versions.
I have read the manual, I have none of the conditions present on those two pages.
As a matter of fact, on my GPS, the only place I can find any mention of Traffic is under Help>Tools. There is a heading for Traffic there. That's it.

I'm going to have to. It may require a total reset and reload of the firmware.

Sounds like the receiver is dead.

No, not according to the manual. The traffic receiver manual (http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/GTM20-FMTMCTrafficReceiver_Ow...) indicates that if no traffic data is being received, the status LED should be yellow, indicating that it is searching for a signal.
Traffic
I just purchased the 750 and was told by the Best Buy sales person that on the 750 and 760 you must purchase a subscription to MSN to get the traffic.
I'm just quoting what was told to me, I have a smart phone and I use that for traffic, since my phone already had traffic, I didn't see a reason to get that coverage.
Hope this helps
Best Buy
djmike - Best Buy reps are not the most knowledgeable individuals.
FYI - you may want to check the prices at other retailers. Best Buy is not known for having the lowest prices.
The Total Traffic Network is free for the first three months

The receiver that comes with the 750 and 760 comes with 3 free months of Clear Channel Total Traffic Network included but will not work with the MSN service. If you want MSN you will need to purchase another additional receiver and that will include as I recall between 12 and 15 months service.

Just got off the phone with Garmin support. They gave me an RMA to return the cable for repair.
Thanks to everyone who replied for your help.

Best Buy
I know, but what I do is purchase it at Best Buy and within two weeks Circuit City has the same item on Sale and Best Buy will match the price. I purchased a HDTV and it went on sale at circuit city, I took the ad and they matched, within the 90 day limit, circuit city had it on sale lower again, I went back to best buy and did another price match.
Sometimes you have to work the system.....

The cable came back today. According to them, they plugged it into a C550 and worked fine. I plugged it into my unit, nothing. No lights, no Icon under Tools>Settings.
So I called them back and they are sending me a new unit in Exchange. Apparently the receiver was defective and they are replacing it under warranty.

Closing the barn door after the horse is gone...
Is it just me (or my coverage area - the SF/North Bay) or do the traffic reports seem just stale enough to be near useless? When ever I get to a "yellow" area the traffic is flowing as well (or better than) normal. Rats!
