Adapter

I would like to use my Streetpilot c550 inside to finish listening to a book I have loaded on the SDHC. I would like to listen from my easy chair so need some way to power the unit. I have an adapter that plugs into the house circuit (110V) and accepts the cigarette plug connected to the unit.

The specs of the adapter indicate:

Input: 100V-240V 200mA 47-63Hz
Output DC12.5V-14.8VMax 800mA

Does anyone know if these specs will harm my unit?

This is what you get from your car power socket, so you should be fine. The range of 12-14.8v depends on whether your engine is running and charging vs battery only. All auto electronics expect this range.

From the Garmin c500 series specification sheet found here;
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/store/assets/pdfs/specs/spc500se...

Power Usage: 15w max@13.8v DC

That's a max value but a little higher (~1.1A vs .8A) than your adapter is rated for. Turning down the screen brightness a bit might help if you have any issues like a low battery warning or the adapter getting too hot.
