Icons Displayed in POI's Pages Of Nuvi 200

Is there any way to have an Icon (i.e. Rest Area) to show up on the initial pages of the POI menu? For example; to see a list of upcoming rest areas, the only way I've found is to go to the "Auto Services" icon and then through several sub topics until finding the "Rest Areas" that I loaded. That's a lot to do while driving. (sorry I don't have my Nuvi in front of me for exact steps)

.

The categories for custom POIs are not built into the unit. They are created by your folders on your computer. See MM's explanation 1/2 way down:
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/8674

If you want Rest Areas to show up as a category immediately under Custom POIs, create a folder named Rest Areas and put it directly into your maind POI folder.

Oops, it just hit me that you are not seeing your Custom POIs at all -- you are seeing the built-in POIs. All Custom POIs are viewed under Extras on my unit (and other models have them under a similar button), but they cannot be searched via the built-in search for built-in POIs.

Thanks BENTBIKER, I found

Thanks BENTBIKER, I found them under the "Extras" icon also, that's 2 touches shorter than "Auto Services". I'd still like to see the icon show up on the first screen of the POI screen. When traveling rest areas are important to me and the less screen touches the better. Thanks for the info.

Rest Areas

I have a SD card in my Nuvi. I have the rest areas in a folder named "Rest Areas" on the SD card. I also added a new sub-folder to the my Nuvi divice folder named "Rest Areas". The rest areas show up as custom POI's under the extras icon (2nd pg "Where to go") and the 2nd pg of auto services 2 pgs into POI's. That's too many screen touches for me while driving. I'd like to see my rest area icon on at least the 1st or 2nd page of the POI icon without having to push the down arrow twice then auto services then down arrow 2 more times to find rest areas. I hope this made since. Bentbiker took a couple of touches off any other advice would be appreciated.

icon display while driving

How do you get the icon of a custon poi while you are driving. I went from my house to my moms house, and no rest area icons came up. I know there is one between houses.

Putting these file folders on your card and/or on the device does absolutely nothing. You didn't say whether you've put anything in the folders, but nothing in the folders will show up under EITHER the built-in POIs or under EXTRAS/Custom-POIs.

These are the only custom POIs that you loaded and you did so with POI Loader. They are only only reachable via the EXTRAS button.

These are the built-in POIs that come with the maps. There is nothing you can do to add to them or change how to reach them.

Alerts

I would suggest that you reload the POIs and set an alert on the rest areas. That way you will always know when one is coming up.

You will, however, still need to go through the steps to see how far away the next one is.

Just a suggestion.

Alerts are certainly a better way to solve your problem while driving. That way, you get a verbal and visual reminder that there is a rest stop nearby. But if you wanted turn-by-turn instructions to it, you would have to go to Where to?-->Extras-->Custom POIs-->Rest Stops--> and select the nearest one at the top.

For reference, if you have an older nuvi, instead of "Extras," you might have the subfolder "My Locations" instead of "Extras."

Tip: if you have a passenger, maybe they can select the rest stop for you on the GPS unit. smile

The firmware is not customizable. Unfortunately, you cannot change where the items show up on the menu screens.

My advice to people if they are not comfortable navigating through the menus while driving is to pull over and stop. Then find what you are looking for and then continue your trip.

Lost

I can not get any alerts or POI's to show up in my nuvi 200. They show up in the drive while connected to my cp but they will not work once I hit the road. Where did I go wrong?

Are you using POIloader

Are you using POIloader?
If you are, do you receive an ending message from POIloader saying XXX POI points loaded?

.

Are you SETTING alerts for your Custom POIs?

Regular Custom POIs do not alert by default. You must set an alert if you want to be alerts.

Setting Alerts

Can you explain how to change/modify for alerts?

POI Loader

You have to set them manually using the POI loader. I've set vicinity alerts for all of the red light cameras and school zones.

You must set an alert if you want an alert to sound. You can run POI Loader in Manual Mode and set whatever alerts you want. Or you can put some alert information in the files themselves.

Check out Phil's great guide for more information about alerts.

Hornbyp's guide to setting alerts with POI Loader
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/6764

Also, be aware that alerts will only sound if you are on the road on which the POI is located, traveling in the direction of the POI, and if the POI is located sufficiently close to the road (typically 50 feet).
