Garmin 2009 Maps - How many times can it be installed

A friend offer to sell me his 2009 map update for $20.00 so I could install it on my Nuvi 350. He has already installed in on his Garmin. I told him that it can only be installed once and not on another Garmin unit. I think I am correct. ??? If not, then I guess it is a good deal.

As far as i know it is tied to the unit that is is reg. to. one unit one instal to that unit only, this is as per garmin tech support.

I don't think it will "brick" the unit. Unit ID simply won't unlock the map do download again.

Yeah, it won't brick the unit. But it won't work, either. You will get a message that the code has already been used. Or that the maps can't be unlocked to the unit.
Worst case
The worst case is it will replace your current maps..then tell you that an UNlock code is needed..this is what it will do on an Etrex or similar unit. and it takes over an hour to do the install..

Won't work
I tried coping the Canada maps from the 2008 update to a SD card and use in another gps and it wouldn't allow that and also tried 2009 on mine from a friend it is tied to the first gps installed on.

Will not work - But
As every one else has already commented, it will not work. However if you are using Mapsource on you PC your friends code will allow you access to view the map data, it may even upload to your unit, but when you go to view / use your unit it will say "Can't Unlock Map Data". You need a unit specific unlock code.

Sounds like that means that you then have no useable map data, right? Not very useful without a working map.

Unlock codes for Mapsource
I bought a City Select 2006 CD from ebay and then had to buy the unlock code from Garmin. I used it one time on my etrex legend -c. I'm told that I can use it one more time on a different unit and then a new code will have to be bought. Don't know if the Garmin DVD's work this way or not.

Starting with the 2008 version, City Navigator only comes with a single unlock code. Prior versions had two unlock codes.
