Ghosts In the Machine - Touchscreen ghost key presses - Nuvi 350

I have a Garmin 350 and I have this nagging problem with my touchscreen. Often times when I touch the screen I get wrong responses... wrong letters, move up or down, or changes screens when I am nowhere near those keys. I have the latest updates. I have recalibrated and reset the thing many times. It doesn't matter if it hot or cold. Any ideas?

Use a stylus

How are you touching the screen ie. with your fingers or use a stylus? I have really fat fingers, so I use a stylus and that seems to work best for me smile

Touch screens...

I did a lot of development work on touch screens in a previous life.

Have someone who normally doesn't use the unit work with it for a while -- this will give you a good clue to whether the problem is in the unit or in your technique.

Are you resting the heel of your hand near the screen, possibly touching it? Another finger? Multiple touches, or very broad touches can produce interesting results.

Slow steady touches also work best -- one system I worked on, a user kept trying very quick pokes with a fingertip or fingernail. When the box didn't do what they wanted, they'd whack it again, faster, and harder! To hard a whack with a small radius object (e.g. stylus tip or fingernail) can crease the top surface of the touchpad, leading to permanent confusion.

A lot of touchscreen systems rely on a small separation between the top and bottom sheets of the touchscreen; touching the top surface with a finger ot stylus actually brings the surfaces into contact, creating an electrical circuit, which can be measured. I remember a bunch of development touch screens that weren't properly sealed and picked up some kind of contamination, leading to erratic behaviour (and requiring replacement).

That was some very good information. I am very careful to use the end of one finger, just below the nail, and to not have any other fingers or my palm near the screen. I am a computer tech and work with a lot of laptops so I knwo the deal... same applies to touch pads. Contacted support at Garmin. Of course the said to recalibrate... should have mentioned that in my email. Sent a reply stating that I have done that numerous times. Waiting on yet another reply. Looks like I am headed towards sending it back. ALso have a lag in the screen. I'll get 50 to 100 feet past an intersection before my vehicle icon passes it. It supposed to update every second from what I understand, well id doesn't.

Touchscreen Problems

Sounds like a politician to me. My unit will act funny if I use my us my whole finger tip. (large fingers)

my nuvi sometimes updates

my nuvi sometimes updates sluggishly too ie:intersections, nut no problems with touch screen, sometimes just a letter off, usually i was off, or just big finger but 95% ok

Touch Screen just a little off...

My unit seems to only have the problem on the MP3 Player. I would hit the FWD button and the Play/Pause would cycle.

I tried to calibrate the screen with a stylus in hopes it would be more precise, but that did not work. I don't have time to send it back so I gave up...

I have the same problem with my nuvi 350. I just forget about it.

My old Nuvi 350

I had this problem and fixed it by installing a screen protector. Not sure why that worked (sensitivity) but it did.

Hope that helps,
Jen

Same Problem

I had the same problem with a 350 I bought from Amazon.com at the beginning of July. It tried all the resets/recalibrations too. I sent it back and bought another from Walmart. That one works fine.

I never figured out what the problem was. It was new so I returned it.

I used a 760 and a 250w for a while and never had the touchscreen problems.

Weird-wonder if they might

Weird-wonder if they might have had a batch of bad screens.

Update

I contacted Garmin and got an RMA for it. Going to send it back tomorrow. All of you with this problem and still have a warranty, I would do the same. It sound liek there are to many out there with this problem. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Got my Nuvi back from Garmin

I RMA'd my Nuvi to Garmin and I am happy to report that the touch screen is now functioning properly. I took 10 business days for them to fix it and send it back, not bad. Another plus is that they put the 2009 map on it for free!

Are you sure it is the same unit? Verify your serial number with the website, you may find it has been replaced.

It is a differnet unit, serial number is differnet. One surprising note is that my unit was 3 months out of warranty and they still did the RMA. Guess I got a refirb. No biggy, it works. Still have the lag in screen updating, but I only notice it if I am going 70 mph. My brother has a nuvi 200 and he says the same thing.
