Download purchase for Canada

Why is the download purchase for the 2009 map update not available for Canada?

.

That question would be best answered by Garmin.

I tried that!

I also tried to find out this info.
I called Garmin several times and kept getting the run-around... I finally gave up.

Garmin did in fact give me the mad maps that I was looking for (and free at that) but it took many calls and I never did find out why we can't download from Canada.

Hopefully they will "fix" this, but I am not really holding my breath.

It really is too bad because they are losing sales.... these maps for example are not available anywhere else... only by download..... but not to us Canadians.

You can get the U.S. but not Canada? And you are in Canada? Do they sell the units in Canada? That is really foolish on Garmin's part.... What maps come on a gps purchased in Canada? confused

It is the add ons (Like Map Maps that are not available. The updates , ie NA2009, are available in stores.

The Mad Maps arfe ONLY available by download and only from Garmin.... even the originators (mapmaps.com) only carry the paper maps.

I am hoping Garmin wakes up SOON!!!!!

Navteq maps ARE avaialble from stores. It is the Mad Maps that are not... and they are done by MadMaps.com in the US... they ship to Canada... but paper only. Garmin told me it was a technical problem and they were working on it. HA! they need better technicians if that is the case... I just don't believe it.

Still love my Garmin.... but this part Not so much!!!!

You can purchase the upgrade

You can purchase the upgrade at Raytech Electronique in Laval, Quebec ( Garmin Service center in Canada) They ship anywhere in Canada

.

Of course, the MadMaps that you can download for compatible Garmin units are not, in fact, actually maps, but rather are customized routes in the form of .GPI files which are not editable. Nor are they viewable in MapSource.

That is correct.

Exactly.... but they still ARE NOT available to Canada for the Garmin anywhere. Garmin made two available to me free since I had been trying to get them for SOOOOO long with a promise of "soon", but they have not yet made the others available. I can't for the life of me see why not..... And that was after contacting Madmaps.com and asking them to step in.

It may not be a huge market, but they are sure missing out completely on the Canadian part of it.

Sounds like it is a

Sounds like it is a licencing issue. Frequently mfgs licence a different "distributor" in Canada and therefore the US can not legally sell them to Canada.

Just a thought!

Could be, BUT....

Possible, But I spoke to madmaps.com who supplies the paper version and they can't see why. They even helped me get to someone to get at least the 2 I was looking for.

I would have no problem getting them from a Canadian site, but they are only downloads and ONLY available from Garmin directly.

Hi from MAD Maps

I'm the person PerrDom spoke to re: his MAD Maps/Garmin downloads. It appears the issue is technical at Garmin's end: we were told that it's because on their website, they don't accept credit cards with non-US addresses.

We're unable to affect that, obviously, but are happy to try to help non-US customers find a work around; give us a call and we'll see what we can do.

Thanks for talking about our maps; I hope, PerrDom, that you've enjoyed the downloads we were able to get for you.

Only in Canada

When I got my nuvi 750 it had the 2008 mape in it and I wanted the 2009. When I tried to get the disk with my c/c it kept saying my numbers were wrong. After about 5 times I called garmen. They told me that my card was fine, but they would not take it because I was in Canada. So then I used my US c/c and the same thing happend. I called back again and they told me to download the 2009 map. I did that, but I did want the disk. Oh well, only in Canada A..

ohwogo nuvi 750

using credit cards abroad or across borders

with all the theft problems credit card companies are using the zip codes or postal codes (in Canada) to authenticate the cc ownership - gas companies are a prime example.

On the web some companies are using the cc and a zip code to authenticate US transactions. The cards themselves identify the financial institution - usually the first 4 digits. If not a US FI then no sale. Converse applies to Canada.

While I do not know for sure, I suspect Garmin is restricting the sale with internet to only US CARDS. Might ask about using pay pal which overcomes this issue. You could also ask about remitting funds via electronic payment and having them push the maps to you.

I suspect this is not a Garmin technical issue but rather a Garmin accounting risk assessment issue.
