880 as Mass Storage Device on computer

Connecting my 880 to my laptop, RT clicking Properties
shows 1.92 GB USED and 1.56 GB FREE, a capacity of 3.48 GB. I assume this is MEMORY, since I have no SD card in the slot.

Below the Garmin Nuvi drive,I see another drive named Removable Disk. Properties show Used space 0 bytes, free space 0 bytes and capacity 0 bytes. Is my computer reading the SD card slot as a drive with no card in it? Do other Nuvi models show a drive letter even if the SD card is not present?

I see only ONE external spot where a card might be loaded, and it is a very narrow one. I do not think a regular SD card could fit in that slot. Would the SD card slot be inside the battery compartment as it is on my Blackberry?

The good news is, I have 1.56 GB FREE on the unit memory, or that is the way I am interpreting it.

Mass Storage

Well, if we assume that my 660 works in mass storage mode the same as your 880, then the answer is yes. Until you brought it up, I never bothered to look in My Computer when the SD card was out.

But indeed, the main nuvi shows up as drive D: and Removable Disk E: where the SD card should be, with 0 used, 0 free and 0 capacity.

Just to compare, my main 600 shows 1.4GB used, 0.6GB free and 2.0GB capacity. Obviously, your 880 has more memory.

EDIT: if you look at the Specs tab on this page at the Garmin website, you'll see it takes a microSD card. Also, check your manual.

Also known as Trans Flash cards. They use a full size SD card and the actual micro SD fits inside it for card readers on computers. They're exactly like the ones used in cellphones.

Can it take a 4gb micro SD card ?

This week I ordered a 512 mb SD card from Garmin, which was listed as an accessory for the 880. It never SAID it was a microSD card, but I'm assuming that it will be. That was the only card Garmin showed for use with my unit. I wanted one with greater capacity.

If the cell phone cards are the exact same thing, do you think I could buy one and get it to work? I haven't noticed any mention of maximum capacity of removable storage for the 880. I think 4 gb would be okay, about the same as the memory. More than that might push it too far, huh?

Return It to Garmin

Call Garmin and check if they shipped the card yet. If they haven't you can cancel the order. Garmin sells the 512mb for $30, you can purchase a 2gb card for less than that from your electronics store!

As you've deduced, the cell phone cards are used by your 880. So you can purchase the largest card you want from your local electronics store. Here's a link confirming there is no size limitation.

Page 60 of the nuvi 880

Page 60 of the nuvi 880 owner's manual says that it accepts a microSD card for data storage. So the website listing with those 512MB/256MB SD cards as accessories for the 880 is incorrect.

I've used a 2GB microSD card (with adapter) in my 680. samat001 reported using a 4GB microSD card in a nuvi 650 in http://www.poi-factory.com/node/8529.

A 4GB card would probably work with your 880, although technically 4GB+ is a microSDHC card, and page 60 only says microSD...

EDIT: the link posted above by GadgetGuy2008 refers to SD cards, so I wouldn't make assumptions about microSD cards from that link.

myGarmin searchsupport for "sdhc" yielded the following (ambiguous) answer:

Question: Do I have to buy SD or MicroSD memory cards for my nuvi directly from Garmin?

Answer:
No, the nuvi will accept most standard SD and MicroSD (Secure Digital, SDHC) memory cards. The memory card is not a proprietary card.

If no 880 owners answer this thread, you might want to check with Garmin tech support for an official answer.

Thanks, WAASup. I am cancelling my order with Garmin for the 512 microSD card, and looking elsewhere. I may err on the side of caution and stay with a 2gb card for the time being. My appetite for using the 880 is greater than my ability to use the extra space, methinks.
