C550 and USB charging question?

Hi all,
I just received my Garmin C550. When plugging it to my computer in the USB port, a picture of a computer showed up on the C550 screen and I was able to see the C550 as a drive on my PC.

Is it being charged at the same time? There is no indication of charging status and after several hours the 'computer' picture is still there. How long does it take to fully charge a C550 thru the USB? Will it show any status when the charging is completed?

Thank you for any comments.

PS: I think I read some old posts here that it can't be charged thru a AC->USB female port, only with the computer USB port?

Yes it's being charged...

But as long as you leave it connected it will show the icon unless you use the safely remove hardware by the time icon on your desk top... That is if you are using windows, not sure about mac...

Thanks Gary,

- I'm using Win XP. What does the "safely remove hw" do to the GPS? (All external USB devices by default are not cached by Windows and therefore there is no danger of data corruption. Why do I need to do that with the Garmin?)

- If not, how do I know it's fully charge?

Thanks again!

Just to turn it off...

Also with the 550

I believe you can go into test mode while it's not connected to the usb cable. Turn on the unit hold the battery/power icon in the top right corner for 8 secs or so, when it goes into test mode attached the usb cable. You will see that it is charging and the status of the battery. When you exit the test mode, you can turn the unit on or off etc as long as you don't disconnect the usb cable...

Unfortunately this appears to be a perennial subject for fellow Garmin users - anyone know if they are planning to make a new model that is not locked out by the computer?
