Log Out

When ending my sessions, I usually 'Log out' using the link near the top right of the page.

I was wondering if there is any technical difference to POI Factory if I just closed my browser instead of selecting 'Log out'?

Does it 'hurt' the POI Factory data base in any way, if I did?

Am I still carried as being 'logged in' if I closed my browser and didn't visit POI Factory for a couple of days? If so, am I labeled a 'slow reader?'

Just wondering .........

Yeah, it was just my attempt at a bad humor joke! razz

I wonder if anyone has gotten confused though with going to hit the "log out" button then realizing it was a thread in "active forum topics" and not the log out button?

Sometimes multi-tasking

Dear Paul,

Sometimes when I am online at the Factory, I am watering and weeding my little garden (i.e., the Hess petrol station file) and not paying attention to the recent postings. I know you were just being facetious but I wanted to have a little fun.

I also have noticed that after I have logged out, sometimes my name has still appeared in the online users section even after I hit the internet refresh page. I do notice however, that when you are logged in, the screens get updated more than if you are logged out if that makes sense. Like if you click refresh (even repeatedly) the last post will be 25 minutes ago but as soon as you log in, there can be 20 posts in those 25 minutes.

Still looking for an answer

It's been a couple of days since I posed the question at the beginning of this thread.

Other than the banter and kibitzing that tends to obfuscate the question, no one has directly answered the query I presented which related to using the 'log out' link or just closing the browser.

Is there a difference that is important to POI Factory's data base and record keeping?

Automatic logout

If it behaves like other web sites, you are automatically logged out when you close your browser. The setting for "always stay logged in" is usually stored in a cookie and you are logged in when you first open the site.

I have stayed logged in and closed my browser and when I get back on I am still logged in the poi-factory but not always to other site or my e-mail. Now that Miss POI is back maybe she can answer this question for Gary and the rest of us.

Gary, There is no difference

Gary,

There is no difference to logging out manually or just closing the browser. You cannot 'hurt' the database doing this. The reason it shows that you are logged in after you close the browser is that databases are not updated immediately, and may take up to 5 minutes to show a change of status.

Secondly, johnc is correct. If you are 'remembered' by a website via a cookie, you will be logged in when you click the link to the site. The server will read your info from the cookie (username, login) and automatically log you in. SSL sites like banks have session expiry limits, and the cookies will only remember your card info at most.

Hopefully, this answers your question.

Cheers!

Clicking the Log Out link closes your session. Logging out is a good idea if you're using a shared computer so other users will not be able to access your POI Factory account.

It's okay to just close your browser if you want to remain logged in on the site. The poi-factory.com cookie will automatically keep you logged in if you return to the site within a few days.

I really don't think it matters one way or another

If you log out the poi-factory cookie makes note of it and the next time you access the site you have to login, if you don't logout, the next time you visit, the cookie logs you in and you are ready to go.... shock

Good Information

This was actually good information to know. I regularly try to ensure I am logged out because I didn't want anyone to think I was available and just being rude. Also, I did not want be part of the cause for "jamming" up the site, etc.. It's a relief to know that if I forget to log out, the system will take care of if for me.

Again, thanks for the explanation.

Much Obliged

A special thanks to all of those who answered with some valuable and interesting information. I appreciate the time you spent offering your comments. Now, I, and others, know.

I can envision that when I sign in and the front page tells me that there are currently 50 visitors (including my ID) that I would think that I would be in the COMPANY of 49 other users. But, those 49 may have already closed their browsers without logging out -- and I would be alone.

oh the ...
