MSN Direct Traffic on Nuvi 760

I called Garmin support and after waiting quite a long time on hold I had the misfortune of getting someone that didn't know "jack" about it. No clue! This was of great disappointment. The same was true with support @ Msn Direct. Never got the promised return call from the "Supervisor" LOL. In sofar as I live in a major metropolitan area complete with all the beltways and traffic hazards one would ever want, after a few months of having Msn Direct I would have expected some traffic activity with avoid icons etc,,or at least something other than "no traffic on my route". I will paste some of my prior inquires in this forum and HOPE to find someone with my SAME Nuvi 760 to help me determine if I have hardware/software issues. I of course have all the current updates etc. THANK YOU..
1)Switched to msn-direct last month. Has attractive menus of various info. I find things kinda slow though with the updating(I DO leave it plugged in). I have seen flash flood icons on the main screen and when pressed lots of map info, yet I have NEVER heard any traffic text or audio at the main gps screen. I also rememeber "not" seeing any traffic icons on the main screen( only the traffic screen has the info.)plus have never been automatically re-routed because of traffic. I have even chosen a route that is showed "slow" traffic, yet told me my chosen route was traffic free! The unit that came with the nuvi 760, TMC, at least did speak and show things on occasion. Anyone else? :)BTW I do have traffic checked under "avoidances" on the nuvi's menu.
2)Have only seen alerts such as "floods" appear on the main screen. If clicked they show a colorful, more detailed map of the affected area. Never once in months have ever seen anything clickable of traffic!
3)Had switched to the MSN direct cable a few months ago for use on the nuvi 760. I have never seen an "avoid" or an audio alert ever on the "main navigation screen" or the " msn traffic screen". If I switch myself to the traffic screen it shows the traffic situations ( no avoids ) and I believe has always shown my chosen route to be in the "green"! I have clicked the traffic check-box both ways under avoidances in the NAVIGATION menu, yet results are the same.. The old TMC cable worked as expected with audio alerts re-routing etc.Have also tried using the "simulator" to get different results,,,Anyone?
Thanks for reading all this. I bought the Msn Diect cable mainly for the traffic, not for all the pretty icons
Signal
Thanks for the input. I will try the reset thing 1st.
Traffic Around NYC
On our trip to PA through the heart of NYC my brother-in-law, who was driving down, went by AM radio and their frequent traffic updates.
But then the only decision he really made was that the traffic delays on George Washington Bridge were pretty light, so we went right through it.
That's how I was able to see TSN in action, sitting in stop and go traffic and counting the minutes (or hour) and the TSN was saying 20 minutes delay.
But then on the other hand an extra 80 miles, mmm, I am not sure I would have done that.

No wonder
... The whole Dallas downtown is practically falls within GOOD, instead of STRONG, and I never received any traffic notifications with any of my MSN receivers in any vehicle. But all of my TMC receivers - time and fuel savers, if not life savers
Moon
I'm making the same choice
BTW I do have traffic checked under "avoidances" on the nuvi's menu.
I have been using the included TMC traffic cable with my 760 for several months in western Chicagoland.
I only used it for a short while with "avoid traffic" selected in the menu. But I think that when I did, it did not alert me. It just automatically routed me when there was traffic on my route, which was ALWAYS. I turned "avoid traffic" off in the menu and it just prompted me instead so I would have to click Avoid if I wanted to have it avoid the traffic spot. I preferred that, so I left it that way.
My issue was that a significant part of my daily commute was well within the radius of reception as per their web site, but I would get no reception. After numerous emails, they concluded that it was just a "white spot" on the map. In other words, a dead zone with no reception.
So since the trial subscription is expiring soon, I ordered the MSN cable to try it out and hope their transmitter is located in a better place with better coverage for me.
Satisfied with MSN Direct
I'm in the Seattle area and have found the traffic to be fairly accurate. No service will be perfect of course and I'm sure it really depends on the area you are in. After my 90 days expired I signed up for a years service. I didn't go with the lifetime because I may not keep my current nuvi for that long.
Overall I'm very satisfied with the MSN Direct service.
MSN
I think MSN is doing upgrades in the Chicago Area. I am seeing service connections where I never had it before. And I have notice some better traffic perdomance.
Not a fan of MSN
One of my main complaints about MSN traffic is that while they say they cover a lot of areas, many of the cities they claim to cover don't actually give the data I need most--traffic speeds. If you look at this link to their site: http://www.msndirect.com/NavigationDataAvailability.aspx
Look how few of the cities have traffic speeds! Every city that has TMC has speed and incident data. I have a blackberry, my "co-pilot" has an iPhone, I can get all of the other information from my phone and I'm already paying for it on my phone bill, so why pay for it again just to have it on my nav system? Since it's my nav system, I want the maps and traffic data to be the best I can get, and in my experience I get that from TMC.
HOV
Have any one used the avoid car pool lane or HOV option in avoidance screens and successfully was detoured based on the hours of operation and regulation specifically in busy areas like DC..? Please share your experience, I am also interested to know if there was a way to modify the avoidance regulation table..

MSN is discontinuing their service
I had received this quote from one of my friends, I thought I will share it with you.
I am, however, concerned with the "lifetime traffic" advertisement since MSN is discontinuing their service on 12/31/2011. This means no more traffic on Jan 1 2012.

There is no evidence of such a claim..!!

I think FM receiver with
I think FM receiver with life time subscription is the best option today though this service may not be the best around. It is likely to stay longer at least till the next generation navigation units come.
