TomTom Experts Needed....

Does this MapShare or the ability to edit a street name really work?

I recently bought a Garmin in hopes that I could use it as a test item for my local ambulance to see if it would add value and result in our department adding them into our rigs. HOwever, I live in a rural area in Minnesota and even though we have E911 addresses the Garmin maps are not updated.

I just spoke with a TomTom agent and they say I would have the ability to change the street name on a TomTom from the old "County Road" name to the new E911 name.

Just looking to you TomTom users to confirm this for me??

Yes, you can change street names on TomTom

From main menu on the One XL, choose:

- next page
- Map Corrections
- Correct a map error
- Edit street name
- Pick a street with their street selector (by name or by picking on map)
- Blah, blah, blah until you find the street you want, then type in a new name

You can even split up an existing street and rename just part of it.

Ok...

Do you have to do this on the device only or can it be done via desktop software as well ?

I'd need to cover a large number of streets.

e.g. most have a county road name.... and I need to change them to E911 like 150th Avenue or 61st Street......

The host software has a

The host software has a "remote desktop" feature that you can use to remotely control the attached TomTom, so technically it "can be done via desktop". What this means is that you can use your PC's keyboard and mouse to enter the changes, but the UI is the same as doing it locally. There is no separate map editor in the host software itself.

Still, it is easier on the eyes and hands to use the host software's remote operation feature, rather than having to type all the road names with your thumbs on the touch screen. I just tried it and it goes pretty quickly - much faster than using my thumbs. It's not like you can script it from spreadsheet data or anything like that, but for having to do them one at a time it seemed to me to be manageable.

Great and Thanks for the Feedback

I am thinking of getting a unit to try this out on and was wondering if the "TomTom XL 330•S" would be a good starter unit.

Again, need to make sure it would have this edit functionality.

Mapshare and Street Names

In answer to your question, I've used both functions numerous times on my GO930 and they both work very nicely.

To change the street names I have to go "Map Corrections" then "Correct Map Error" then "Edit Street Name", then make a selection that fits the situation ('On Map', 'By Name', 'Near You', or 'Near Home') and follow the prompts from there. Each model does vary in how you change the street names however.

As for Mapshare, I love it. I have both made and received map corrections that have helped me during my trips. You might check in your Tomtom for a little function called "Quick menu". If it is available and you click on it you will see five or six different "quick menus" to choose from, one of them is "mark location of map error". If you put a checkmark in the box next to this line it will put an icon on the screen. As you are driving and you find that there is something that doesn't agree with your TT (road speed, stop sign, no street, etc.) just touch the Quick Menu icon and it will save that spot for correction later on. I've used this mainly for when the speedlimit on the street is different from what my TT says it should be. When I get home I can make the corrections within the TT itself (or connect to a computer and make the corrections), and then upload them through Mapshare the next time I connect on the internet.

Both of these features are done using the GPS unit itself, the only time you need to be connected to a computer is to upload the map changes to Tomtom and to download map changes that others have made. As a side note, if you read some other postings in this forum there are those who are leery of using a thing like Mapshare. There is a thought that there are those crazy people out there who would make bogus map corrects just to mess things up. I agree that this could happen, have I experienced this though? The answer is no.

There is another function that Tomtom has, but I'm not sure if it's available in all models, adding streets. This has to be done while the TT is connected to a computer (the changes have to be made through the computer while the TT is connected to it), after the correction is made it is then uploaded to Tomtom for verification before it is added through Mapshare. I added a street a couple of weeks ago and submitted it, I received the update a couple of days ago. Not bad turn around time considering all of the TT users and how many people would be sending new streets to them.

I hope all of this helps.

Thanks for the information.....

I think I got enough information so I placed an order for a xl330S.

ON a side note are there any other tricks or third party software that can be used on the TomTom to enhance it further ??

Tricks? Depends on your reverse engineering skills

Some things are published, like how to make new voices, but you might be able to figure out how to reverse engineer various data files on the disc - the TomTom file system mounts on your PC/Mac as any other USB disk drive, and you can muck around in it if you want to. So, if you can figure out the format of the map changes file, then you could write you own app to create it. Good luck with that.

You're welcome

First of all...congratulations on your purchase!...and welcome to POI-factory!

In answer to one of your questions.....if you are looking for third party software that installs within the TT, I'm not aware of any. You can however create sounds and voices, and icons for your TT and upload them to it. If you are looking to add POI's or POI icons to your TT then you've come to the right place, there are tons to choose from and probably the largest, most friendly group to get help from.

Within the TT itself there are a number of ways you can customize it to fit your needs, once you get it you will see what I mean. Good luck and have fun!

This may sound redundant but...

...check here for more info concerning ALL TomTom models: www.tomtomforums.com smile

Yes, there is 3rd party software available for the One, check that site for the actual URL. smile
