Nuvi 750 & Route usage vs. Favorites

Help me understand this:

At the end of July, I have to go to Rockville, MD. So on my Nuvi 750, went under settings and created a route from Dulles airport to my hotel. Cool...so far.

What I'm failing to understand is:
A: How do I use that "route" created vs. just arriving at the airport, get my rental car, acquire signal, goto my "favorite" hotel.

Is there an advantage of one (1) over the other?

Just trying to grasp the full potential of a "route" if any.

Thanks Factory users!!

Depends your planning

It depends. Route for Garmin unit is more like itinerary for TomTom's, which means multiple waypoints in general. The lesser models do not have this function which is probably arbitrate by design to force user to buy more expansive unit. As for Tomtom, all units across the board have it. It is most useful if you plan a trip and know multiple stoppage points in advance. You can generate within and/or transfer it to the unit so you do not have to enter each waypoint manually as favorite instead.

Another advantage is you can also do that in Mapsource then transfer to the unit and it is a lot easier that way especially you need google map to help you.

Routes vs Favorites

IMO - going from point A to point B, just search for the address when you get in the car. If you want to pre-plan, you could search prior to your arrival and find it in recent. If you think you will be back, you can always save it as a favorite.

If you have multiple destinations, you can use the route function and it will attempt to determine your best route.

Routes can not be imported. I rarely use routes. If I have multiple locations, I just search for each one, then pick them out of the recent folder.

route import

I think the NT version of the map disable the route import and only non NT map can do that with an older mapsource software. The newer mapsource seems strip this info, probably by design...

Depends on your drive

Stu, the advantage of a route is:
1) If you know your Nuvi will take you down highway xx and you would rather take highway yy instead. Probably won't do much for you on your drive from the airport to hotel. You just want to get there efficiently and don't care so much for the journey. A single Favorite will do you fine here. What if you wanted to take a scenic route instead, that wound throught the mountains or something like that? An extra waypoint or two might generate a detour like that. Creating a route in MapSource will let you specify the exact roads you want.

2) Think Multiple Stops. You could save multiple Favorites and then remember to select them one at a time. Or you could make a route with multiple waypoints and only deal with a single route.

3) Custom avoidances. If you know a certain area has really bad traffic or is under construction, you can select roads and areas in MapSource and it will build a route around those areas.

For most things, a Favorite or two will be enough.

What?

Thats My POINT !

What wont accept routes??

Stu_Pidasso was asking about whether to use Favorites or build a route to get from the airport to the hotel. He has a Nuvi 750 which will accept routes from MapSource or build a route within the GPS.

And what about the "NT version of MapSource disabling the ROUTE IMPORT"? No such thing!

And "and only non NT map can do that with an older mapsource software". I don't know what that is all about. I've been using an older version of MapSource for over 5 years with both non-NT and now with NT maps in MapSource and it works just fine.(Have both types loaded in MapSource)

The thing that causes ROUTES not being downloaded to the GPS is the GPS itself.

And that was my point

That he/she probably has a gps that won't accept routes and assumed it wouldn't because of the nt version in mapsource...

But you are correct it is a limitation of the gps not the map or mapsource....
