Question about Track Logs on Nuvi 7xx

I just returned from a trip and was able to use my 780 on the plane during a cross country trip. Everything worked great during the flights, but for some reason I am unable to view the track logs of the flights in Mapsource. I copied the Current.gpx file as usual but when I open it in Mapsource all I see are the tracks generated while driving, before and after the flights. I know the tracks haven't been overwritten because I can still view them on the unit while browsing, but they are nowhere to be found in Mapsource. Anyone have any idea on how to view these in Mapsource?

Was the unit turned on

Was the unit on during the flight? Was it where it could receive a signal? If the unit was on, but in simulator mode, it does not keep tracks.

Yes, the unit worked fine on

Yes, the unit worked fine on the flight and left the blue track line as I flew. It wasn't in simulator mode (I've never turned that on) and I had it set to pedestrian mode so it wouldn't try and snap to a road. The signal and accuracy were both very good.

Not sure

I am not sure what the problem is. According to the help section, all tracks should appear in the tracks tab. It doesn't appear to distinguish between on-road or off.

Sorry I couldn't help.

One possible explanation ...

I am guessing here, but could it be that the bread crumbs were to far apart from each other, for the nuvi to recognize them as a continuous track?

.

Instead of copying the current.gpx file, have you tried using the "Receive from Device" button in MapSource?

Tried that too

Yes, I tried that too. Only the same driving tracks are listed. Very strange, I know the tracks were created because I can still see them on the unit.

Oh well, I guess it's not a big deal. I just wanted to check them out in more detail using Mapsource.

The 'official' (as opposed to the hidden variety) tracklogs are 'snapped to the road', aren't they?. Which presumably is an issue, for a 'plane journey wink

If you can still see them on the 7xx, then as you say, they are still there, somewhere. Maybe, they only get flushed to current.gpx at boot time (in mass-storage mode). Perhaps you could deselect City Navigator, and it would be persuaded to dump them? (I'm thinking: no detailed map = no mismatch of roads to snap to ... something like that). Or maybe set it to Pedestrian mode before rebooting.

Clutching at straws, I know, but you never know your luck!

Tried that too

I had the unit set to pedestrian mode while flying to keep it from snapping to a road and that worked fine. Of course it did say that I was walking east at 525 mph. smile

When I didn't see them at first I thought that maybe it had separate logs for each mode as well. Vehicle, pedestrian, etc. So I set the mode back to pedestrian and connected the unit again to my PC but still just saw the same tracks.

I had a thought ...

If you remember, the Nüvi 7xx series was writing gibberish to its track logs at one point. The gibberish took the form of high speeds and altitudes... idea

They fixed the problem in a recent firmware upgrade (2.9 or 3.0).

Do you suppose, they just filtered those high values out (completely) to solve the problem and have accidentally thrown the baby out with the bath water?

You may be right.

That thought did cross my mind too since I specifically had that problem and reported it to them. I'm thinking about asking Garmin about this just to see what they say.
