New Nuvi 760 Owner

Hi there. I just bought a Nuvi 760 last week and have some newbie questions.

1)Is it common for street names to be absent from the map while driving. Sometimes or shall I say most of the time the only street names I see are the names of the street coming up. Besides that it doesn't display what street I'm on or any other surrounding streets. It shows all the colored lines representing streets, highways, etc.. just no names?? Is that normal??

2)While driving a route if I suddenly get the urge for some fast food and have to drive off route is there a way to put my route in a sort of pause so that I don't have to hear "recaculating route" a million times? If I were to hit the stop button would that mean I would have to reinput my route again or is it saved and would pick up where I left off??

3)Can you add custom images(bmp) icons to preloaded poi's or is it only for custom poi's? Also, what happens to preloaded poi's if I load a custom poi of the same nature, do they get overwritten?

4)On my settings for map detail what will be displayed by checking more or most? I have checked both and notice no difference?

5)Anytime I call someone through the GPS they tell me they're getting an echo, is this common??

Sorry for so many questions, I'm sure I'll have a million more but these are the most troubling to me at the moment. Thank you in advance and hope to learn alot from this community.

I'll give it a go

1. Yes, it is common for this to happen. You can change you level to more or most to have more information appear. Wrench>settings>map>map detail.

2. If you know where you are going to go and eat, you can go the menu, click where to>POIs and select the eatery you wish to visit, then click GO and add it as a via point on your route.

3. No, the preloaded POIs are set with their images.

4. This is what adds detail to your map. It will show more street names, the names of parks, grey dots for POIs, etc...

5. Not familiar with the bluetooth function.

Hope this helps. I am sure someone else will fill in what I have missed.

1. Yes, also depends on how

1. Yes, also depends on how far you are zoomed in or out. The more you are zoomed in, the more steet names you will see. It can't list every street or else you couldn't read the screen. It doesn't list the name of the street you are on, correct. To me, it's not that major as I know what street I am on, most of the time lol. I know streets can change names every now and then.

2. As far as the Recalculating, that's when I start changing voices to see how each one sounds (just kidding). I know it can get annoying, but you can go to the main page and hit the volume and turn it down, or hit stop. When you get back, hit the Where to button on the main page and hit Recently Found.

3. Your cutom POI's that you load will be in under the Extras icon (Where To, then scroll down to Extras).

4. More or Most for me tends to show me more details when I am on trips (i.e. parks, lakes, etc.) from what I have noticed. I keep mine on Most for the heck of it, but I understand it may make my maps redraw a little slower, but it hasn't bothered me.

5. It may be due to how you have the volume set. If set too high, I am sure they can hear themselves. I like having the ability to use the Bluetooth part, as I have used it a few times, but I still like using a wireless headset. It is very convenient, if I forget my headset, to just use the 760's Bluetooth capabilities.

When you set you home, for some reason, you have to take the hyphens out or it will leave off the last 2 digits. This only happens for the Home when you program it. Just take the hyphens out and you will be fine.

If you are several presses into other screens and want to go back to the Home page, just keep your finger on the Back icon at the bottom right for a couple of seconds and it will take you back. That way, you don't have to keep hitting the back button time and time again. I learned that trick from someone on this sight. It has saved a my fingers a lot of work hahaha.

Congrats on your purchase. I think you will really enjoy it. Also, check to see what Map version you have. Since you just purchased it, you have a free upgrade coming. If it has the 2008 map, you get a free upgrade to 2009 if you do it within 90 days, I believe it is.

another question

Thanks for the replies, I am a little disappointed in the lack of information I get regarding surrounding and current street names on the map page but I will keep trying all suggestions to see if I can get better results.

I have a question regarding the poi's. Do you only see the poi icon if you are actually driving to the poi or is it possible for the icons to be displayed on the map regardless of if you are navigating towards one?

Thanks.

There are millions of POI locations. Do you really want to see them all on the screen?

The screen isn't big enough

The screen isn't big enough to post all the streets, but the more you zoom in, the more streets will be listed. Not sure how they decide what streets are displayed at certain zoom levels, but it isn't that bad. If you set up a route, at least the 760 will get you there lol. If you set up a route, you can also check the directions by pressing on the lower right arrows on the screen.

You really don't want all the POI's to show up, otherwise you wouldn't be able to see your screen as it would be cluttered. Or at least that's my preference. I know anythingthat I set up show up and go under Favorites. The POI's that I have downloaded from here go under Extras, but they show up. Some of the POI's that come pre-programmed are out-dated, so I am glad they don't show up. Plus, every single business won't be listed either.

Have fun tinkering with your new purchase. If you find any new shortcuts and tricks, let us know. This site is a wealth of information. If no one knows the answer right away, someone always seems to find out the answer and posts it. I learn something new all the time.

Let me rephrase my question. What I meant was.. Is it possible to set a specific set of poi's (ex. all walmarts) to show on the map page while driving? For instance I've been reading about the custom poi's for example the rest areas. From my understanding while driving if you come in the area of a rest stop you will be alerted (if you want) and it will also show an icon on the map. Now I know the alerts aren't possible with preloaded poi's but is it possible to have icons displayed or only if you use custom poi's??

As for my street name problem here is a poor picture of what I'm talking about, www.milkmanproductions.com/images/0623081236.jpg hopefully you guys can tell me if this is normal. I mean I seem to hardly get street names displayed and if they are they seem to be random on the screen.

BTW I have all current maps and updates. Thanks.

That screen looks about

That screen looks about right. Do you have your Navigation set to MOST?

The POI's that you download will show up. Just the ones that come preloaded won't, unless you really zoom in, and I think have it on MOST.

As long as I get the ones to show up that I load, I am happy.

I also seem to get a few more street names when I am just using the 760 rather than when I am in route. Not that many more, granted, but a few more. I get what I need anyhow.

I got mine a few months ago and I am still learning and still tinkering with it. It has done everything I have needed it to do, so I guess it is OK. I can never learn too much about these things.

The only problem I have had has been addresses. When I plug in an address and go to it around here (i.e. house number), it will be 2-4 houses off. I think that is a map error and not the Garmin error.

My daughter is on a competitive cheerleading team and if we take some of her friends home, I will plug in their address and go to it. As mentioned, it will get me to their street, but sometimes 2-4 houses off. I just act like I know what I am doing hahahaha. At least I get there
