Chit Chat Thread for the week of June 23rd 2008

This is the place to talk about things that are not gps related, you can discuss whatever you would like, as long as it is clean. Remember we have families that have their children involved in the GPS fun and we don't want to make parents feel uncomfortable when their children ask what that word means.

Have fun...

This thread will be closed on Monday and a new one will be opened.

Ah Yes

Another week of "useful" comments to make our life more complete.
Just kidding, of course ! razz
Finally starting to feel like Flor-i-duh again. After weeks & weeks of no rain I have had at least one afternoon shower 8 of the last 9 days. Lawns are starting to turn green again - it was so dry for awhile that even watering twice a week wasn't keeping the lawns green, green !
Anyway - have a GREAT week !

Last Winter

Last winter I was going to Telluride Co. for a little skiing. I decided to take "SPARKY", my pet hot dog, along on the trip. He said he would love to try a few things out on the slopes.

Lucky I had my cell phone video camera with me. He amazed me and I thought you might like to see some of what he did.

Tune in later in the week for the continuing saga of my pet hot dog Sparky!

Rain and Hail here.

We have had 3 days of big thunder here, but luckily it has not caused much damage. The Crops are sucking up the rain as fast as it comes down, I think my lawn grew twice as fast..the skies are rumbling as I type..

I'm just glad to be home ...

... was unable to take Amtrak back to Detroit from Denver, due to flooding in Iowa. I had to book a last-minute flight for Saturday. At least Amtrak refunded my return train fare in full, however it was not nearly enough to cover the substantial cost of the plane fare. I will keep that in mind for future reference. Between the airfare and the additional cost to return the rental car to the airport instead of the train station, I could have driven my own personal vehicle out to Wyoming and skipped the trip to Denver altogether.

sounds

I downloaded the sounds for redlight and speed cameras but they don't seem to be working. I just get the red box and alert at the top of my Garmin c340. I renamed the sound file to match the names of the files for each speed and redlight data file. Is this the correct procedure or should I have left the file names alone?

Red Light Camera (Jack's Voice) Alert Sound and

Smoke everywhere

The area where I live has been surrounded by fires. Lots of fires. The air is horrible and the sun is just an orange ball seen through the haze. I feel sorry for the folks just up the hill - a lot of houses burned to the ground.

Some places are flooding and we're on fire wishing for rain. It's a weird planet.

Gettin Hot in AZ

14th day in a row with temps above 110! Yikes!

It's a dry heat ;-)

Stay cool out there in AZ!

I visited Arizona for the first time in 2006 and recall coming out of the air-conditioned rental car into the street, thinking that the feeling of heat was like when you open an oven door to check on your roast. It's like no other heat that I've experienced.

It was also my first encounter with what appeared to be "cool zones" built into strip malls.

A Little Downhill racing

As stated earlier I would show you more on Sparky's skiing trip to Telluride Co. He spent a the 1st whole day just hot dogging it down the slopes and that was what you were seeing.

On the 2nd day he decided to on do some downhill racing. I did get some shots of him doing the downhill. I will show them now.

On the 3rd day he had a slight accident, will show you later this week.

I love it, that is great. I always get excited when I see that there is a new Sparky movie.

Mixed bag & "new to me" car

Overcast, some sun, strong winds, torrential downpours, hail - and that is just the weather for yesterday! Supposed to have more of the same all week. (Ever see Louis Black make fun of Massachusetts weather? It's too funny.)

Turned my Volvo out to pasture after 14 years. (Actually, trying to find it a good home, has at least another 100,000 miles in it.)
Found a deal on a 2002 BMW X5, 4.4i, V8.
Might just have to look at it, with the price of gas won't be doing much joy riding. Thought of getting a hybrid, but the BMW was $19,000 cheaper. I can buy a lot of gas for $19,000. (Trying to justify my purchase.) For sure I'll be using my Garmin, don't want to do any extra driving looking for places.

Sparky get a BOOBOO

I mentioned on Wednesday Sparky had a accident on his 3rd day hot-dogging it down the slopes. I just happened to be talking a few videos of him, and caught the accident on my cell phone.

Well here it is.

He wasn't able to ski anymore on this trip.

I also have some videos of what went on later.

Show them later in the week.

Ski Lodge

Hope he's not hurt too bad.

Time for him to join all the others in the ski lodge wearing casts (although, it looks like he landed on his little head). Maybe a nice snifter of brandy will make him feel better as he warms his feet by the fire - but don't get too close! Hot dogs... fire... bad combination. laugh out loud

Don't know if I could tell an "A" from a "B" if they were side by side except for the bombay maybe. I also was involved in the 62 Cuban crisis flying SA 16 Air Rescue seaplanes out of Homestead AFB in Florida. Small world huh??
