Icons for POI files

OK. I'm new to this GPS POI file thing. I've figured out how to load the POI files in my Garmin 260W, but how do you attach the Icon files to a database? For example I just downloaded the Starbucks files and icon.

In the FAQ there are some very good examples on how to load the Icons into the same files with your poi's. also how to put alert sounds there.

Icons don't always show

I found on my 660 that if I load the icons, they only show if the thing is in "View Maps" with no destination and set to under 500 ft. If I set the destination I never see the icons. This seems strange to me but I think that's the way Garmin made it.

True, the zoom level must be zoomed to 300,200,120 or 80ft. Most units will only show the zoom level in 2D mode. You can zoom all the way in ( + ), then back out ( - ) three times, that will get you to 300ft.

Your custom icon should display on the nav map while driving and with no particular route set. Even if a route is set, say to Kmart and you pass a Starbucks, the starbucks icon should display on the nav page, as well as the kmart icon. You have to be fairly close to the location for it to show up. Also, be aware that the lat/lon location may be off from the physical location. The icon will be at the lat/lon set in the poi file.
The icon should definitely display for any destination you "go to". Again, it must be zoomed in.

Be aware that sometimes a software update can (and has in the past) mess with the custom bmp displays.

You can select a custom poi, then select view map and it should then display in any zoom level.

This is how it works on my 550 and to the best of my memory, the 660 icon display properties are/were the same, at least up to a few updates ago.
