Clearing POI/proximity alerts

Is there any way to clear a POI/proximity alert on a nuvi 650? I've created a POI file listing attractions I want to see on my trip. Each attraction has a proximity alert to let me know when I'm near it. As I approach that point, the text bar on the top turns red and the nuvi starts beeping at me. Unfortunately, I've now lost my next turn information. And I have to listen to the nuvi continue to beep at me. I had thought that I could acknowledge the alert by tapping the red text bar, but that doesn't seem to clear the alert and return to the directions.

Thanks,
doug

Yep

There are two ways. One is quick, the other is ugly. The quick way is to turn off proximity alerts under tools. The ugly way is to re-load the POIs and remove/don't add the proximity alert.

I've done both. I removed

I've done both. I removed the proximity alerts for certain categories of POIs. Then I got frustrated with the nuvi beeping at me and turned off the alerts altogether. I was hoping to find a happy middle ground -- a way of telling the nuvi, "thanks for notifying me, now stop it until I hit the next point."

How Far

How far out are you being alerted? Some units constantly alert from the distance out until they reach the actual POI. You might want to shorten the distance away from the poi to lesson the annoyance.

I don't know of how to get your unit to "alert and shut up" until the next POI. Then again, I don't know what unit you have (though I am guessing 3xx or 6xx series).

I have a nuvi 650. I agree,

I have a nuvi 650.

I agree, I need to shorten the alert distance. For some points it is set at 5 miles only because while dragging a 5th wheel and debating options with my wife and daughter, I need all the time I can get.

Well, then

You will have to decide which one you do without, the advance notice or timely advise from the wife...lol.

Wish I knew of a way to stop your system from constantly alerting. Maybe someone else can chime in with that tidbit.

Good luck.

What setting have you chosen under ProximityPoints/Alerts-Change/Audio? It may be set to "Continuous-All Alerts".

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

My solution

My solution was to not alert except for things that I really wanted alerts for. In my case I want alerts for rest areas. This is important to some of us traveling with little ones and some adults. I set the alert for 25000 ft. But, I don't want a loud obtrusive alert or to put ideas into peoples heads and have to stop at every rest area. So..., I created an mp3 file with {name of the file}.mp3 that has a quiet tone/buzz /click (your choice) that is just loud enough to attract my attention to the gps. I get the flashing red alert and the restareas symbol on the map that I also associated {name of file}.bmp.

Anyway that gives me what I want-advanced notice of restareas with without being annoying.
