Just bought nuvi 760 but it does not start!!

I ordered Garmin Nuvi 760 a few days ago, and received it yesterday. I tried turning it on today, following through the "quick start" guide.

I installed the mount and all. Everything was fine.

Until...

When I actually turned the unit on after connecting it to my car and turning the car on, the unit would start up fine. It would say "loading map" and have a white bar between the words and the Garmin logo.

However, after a few seconds, the words and the white bar disappear. All that's left is the black screen with the Garmin logo, and a small icon at the center-bottom of the screen that shows a small black box (perhaps representative of the unit) connected to a tall grey box (perhaps representative of the computer).

I tried connecting it via the computer, and it connected fine. I tried updating it by going to the Garmin website, and it updated fine. But still, it gave me the same error. It just would not start!

Even now, as I am typing this, I have it connected to my computer through the included USB cable. However, it's just stuck there, with that black screen with the garmin logo in the middle and that icon in the bottom center.

Please, any help would be appreciated. I've tried everything I can think of.

Also, there's a dead pixel about halfway between the center icon and the left side of the screen...

.

It sounds like the unit is in USB Mass Storage mode (which would explain the image of the nuvi attached to a computer CPU on the nuvi screen).

You need to be sure that you are using the Garmin power cord connected to the nuvi mount in your car. Non-standard cords are likely to produce non-standard results.

It sounds like it's working perfectly fine when connected to the computer with the USB cable.

But I was using the garmin

But I was using the garmin power cord... I connected it to the lighting chord... sad

get your unit connected to

get your unit connected to your PC and go to the Garmin site and register the unit whit the serial number ,it's under the unit where you plug in the support you might kneed a magnifying glass it's written so small . Then follow the instructions on the site and get all the numbers and codes ,do your updates and when done the unit will start OK .Stand outside and let the unit detect the satellites and then adjust it to your own specs . Everything should be OK .

.

I'm not sure I understand what the "lighting chord" is.

Be sure that the power cable is connected to the correct place. The vehicle power cable connects to the right side of the cradle.

Is that where you are connecting it?

I'll try jaclao's method. I

I'll try jaclao's method.

I am connecting it to the "lighter plug"... where most other appliances connected fine...

Is your car cord connected to the cradle or nuvi?

Your Nuvi is in Mass Storage mode for some reason. Does your auto power cord connect to the cradle, or are you using an auto cord that connects to the bottom of the Nuvi in it's USB port?

Have you tried resetting the 760?

Start with the unit OFF and unplugged from power.
Touch and hold the lower right corner of the screen with an index finger or the eraser end of a pencil.
Continue touching and holding the lower right hand corner of the screen then power the unit ON.
After the unit powers ON, you will see a new message: Do you really want to erase all user data?
When this message displays, remove your finger from the bottom right of the screen and touch Yes.
The unit will go through the Master Reset.
Follow the onscreen instructions to set up your nuvi.

Also the screen you describe

Is the screen when the unit is attached to the computer or being charged though the usb port with a usb type charger. Normally when you disconnect it from the computer or charger it will start as a gps....

Thanks for all your help. It

Thanks for all your help.

It took 4 hours to download the map update, and it's been 30 minutes since it began to install the map pack onto the gps unit. I'll keep you updated as to whether this fixed the unit.

I'll try the method aophiuchus described after the map update is finished.

It's still in usb mass

It's still in usb mass storage mode sad :( sad

I tried all the methods. I updated the map. I resetted it by putting my finger on the lower right corner and pressing yes.

This was the condition right out of the box. I've been wrestling with this for hours. The whole day today. I still can't get it to work! sad

Well this isn't going to help much today

crying But Monday give Garmin tech support a call:
1-800-800-1020 (U.S.)

You shouldn't be having any trouble. It sounds like you have a defective unit... crying

Is it possible to return it to where you purchased it?

Run on Battery?

Time, I think, to go back and check the obvious.

Does it do the same thing when on battery only.....that is, NOT plugged into any external power source?

If the answer to that is YES, then a call to Garmin or a return to the store is definitely in order.

Or, orgolove, if it works correctly, as I suspect, please go back to Motorcycle Mama's posts -- is the small end of the charger cord plugged into the cradle (as it should be), or is it plugged directly into the unit?

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

I don't know about the 760 unit, But there is no way I can plug my 12 volt power cord into my nuvi 750 with out going into the cradle first.

I agree there is no way to plug the 12v lighter cable into the nuvi without it being attached to the cradle...something is up here...

Probably

You are assuming that there is no way for him to have received the wrong power adapter. Other models have adapters with a mini-USB connector. I agree that it's a longshot, but what I want to know is why nobody said a word when MM suggested this possibility, but when when it is meeeeeee . . . that's a different story. rolleyes And I don't want to hear the Lloyd Bentsen retort. wink

wrong cable

Unless that unit had been sold previously and someone has slipped in a different cable the chances are extremely slim the wrong cable was shipped when manufactured. A very simple question is ....does the cigarette lighter cable have a small flat connector or a mini usb connector?

I just don't think they were on here when she made the comment and didn't read back.

I always follow her advise, it is the best on here.
