Edge 705 Versions

Am looking at buying a 705 since i now know my 350 will not accept gpx files for routes. i need to do some more work but i assume the 705 does accept gpx files and display routes? also, one version comes with a data card and street maps. the other versions do not. but from the website i cant figure out whether the base version will accept gpx and display routes - or if i put the card in from my nuvi 350 will that do the trick

any help appreciated

thx

Edge 705

Card for 705 is MICRO SD and it contains the street maps. No way to use your SD card from 350. The owner's manual shows a folder for gpx files on the computer, but it doesn't go into what is stored in them. Separately, it recommends that "courses" be loaded using Garmin Training Center or Garmin Connect software. So, I'm not sure whether routes are the same thing as courses or whether routes created in Mapsource for automotive GPS units can even be used. There is no mention of POI Loader. I'd be interested in knowing more as well.

more research

Have done more research in the meantime. It seems the best thing is to save the route as a gpx and then save to that folder on the unit not the card. if u put on the card, you risk erasing maps already on it. I still cant figure out why you need the card/maps. And if you don;t have a card and you put the route in how does it show up on the screen etc. Still researching - but slow progress.

Hmm and interesting thought..

You can use a preprogammed sd card in any unit, can you copy the card to another card or is it locked in some way? If you can you should be able to copy the info to the micro sd...

Has anybody tried to make a backup of their pre-programed SD card?

Without the card you would

Without the card you would get no maps. The Nuvi 350 already have all the files (Maps, etc) already internally on the unit.

Without the maps, you will have, at best, the base maps showing only major highways. So, a route would not say to turn onto a given road, but rather turn right sometime soon. If several roads came in at or near the same point, you'd have to guess which one was correct. If that is acceptable to you, there are units costing much, much lesss.

You cannot copy maps from one card to another.
