New Garmin owner

Hi all,
I have been scrolling around checking the site out.
I just bought a Garmin C550 yesterday. Any helpful hints or tips I should be aware of?
I'm a newbie with a GPS, so don't be afraid to tell me something basic. 
It would appear that I had Map 2009 installed on my unit when I registered it yesterday. Hopefully that's right.
Now I am looking for some freebie POIs for my area. I am in the Ottawa, Ontario, Canada area. Any ideas?
