Is MapSource Installed with Map Update 2009?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but will the MapSource application be installed on my PC when I run the 2009 Map Update, or do I need to install it separately?

I installed mine separately.

I installed mine separately.

Same Disc?

Does it come on the same disc or do I need to download it from the Garmin site?

Mapsource

The nuvi 650 doesn't come with mapsource, it is not especially necessary, If you want mapsource there is a recent thread about downloading it for free, it is a 2 step process.

MapSouce

If you have MapSource already installed on your computer the 2009 map installation will update it.

Mapsource

I wondered the same thing and found out when you run the 2009 update it loads some version of mapsource on your computer. You then go to the Garmin website and download the mapsource update. Go to the site shown below and you will see mapsource is the fourth one down. Download and follow the instructions and you will then have mapsource fully on your computer.

Thanks for the

Thanks for the clarification. I found that update on the Garmin site, but it said that it would only work if MapSource was already installed.

Just curious, did you get the update on disk or download it? Is there any difference between the two that you are aware of?

I had downloaded the 2009 new maps because I was entitled to one since I had purchased my unit the middle of April. If you have loaded the new maps it automatically loaded a file to transfer maps to the unit. Look in the file where you loaded the new map and you should see an icon that says mapinstall. If you find this you are able to download mapsource from the garmin site. Download it to the same folder where you found the Mapinstall file. Worked great for me...I don't know if there is a difference in DVD and download but I would doubt it.

Thanks Again

I downloaded the Map Update last night, installed it this morning, then downloaded and installed the MapSource application. Everything seems to work fine.

Thanks again for your help.

Look for your maps.

Like Bobby said above, MapSource apparently needs to be installed to the same directory as the new maps. In my case it installed into C:\Garmin. You might want to check and see if the new maps are there. If so you can try uninstalling MapSource and then download the MapSource update into that same folder and reinstall. That worked for me. I do have to say that none of this was very clear to me. I think Garmin could do a much better job explaining how to install these programs.

Look for this

When i loaded my 2009 maps it all went with out a hitch, I already had the mapsource with 2008 maps, soo when i went to mapsource i didnt have maps, up on the top of mapsource, in the left corner you can select maps, 2009, 2008 or NO MAPS, make sure (if you have 08 and 09 maps that one or the other is selected,
hope this helps.

Nuvi 750

Just got my Nuvi 750, have to say...so far I love it. It came preloaded with at 2008 software, registered with Garmin and was able to do a free 2009 update.
So far...so good.
I have MapSource and MetroGuide v7 that I use on my old eMap unit...which still works great.

Is either one of the softwares any benefit to using or installing...and can those be used or installed on a 750?

New to the 750 world

Stu

Do we really need to download update?

Not to be difficult here but this is the description from the 4th item down:
"Download MapSource United States TOPO Basemap Patch
Please note:
This patch is only applicable for all versions of the MapSource United States TOPO product. It will not affect any other MapSource product.
Change:
Removed fragment of map template from northern Minnesota area so that MapSource would not report an error when viewing data in this area."

I don't think we need this update. I may be wrong...I often am :>

It Depends

If you already have MapSource installed then you probably don't need the update/patch unless it fixes a specific problem you may be experiencing.

In my case, MapSource did not install at all on my PC with the 2009 map update. After the map update installation I then downloaded the MapSource update noted above, installed it in the same folder with the maps and I now have a full working version of MapSource using the new 2009 maps.

I see what you are saying.

I did not previously have Mapsource installed.
I did the 2009 upgrade and like you said - no Mapsource.
Now I am off to download the update.
Garmin has made this more difficult than it needs to be!

Thanks.

On Edit: Decided to try to get a CD shipped to me from Garmin. Used the my.garmin approach with my serial number, etc. We will see....

I totally agree.

You could try installing the update http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209 and see how it goes. Just make sure you download it to the same folder where the map update placed the map files. For me is was C:\Garmin. Just run the install from there.

I was going to request the CD as well, but when I called just last week they said it was on backorder and would be 4-6 weeks. I didn't want to wait that long.
