satellites still connected after 350's antenna closed?

Hi. I pushed the strength bar icon, closed the antenna and noticed it seems like the nuvi 350 is still connected to the satellites... the signal strength varies slightly on each satellite. On top it states GPS is Off -- but it looks like it's still connected?
Does the nuvi keep it's connections after the antenna is closed? If so, why? And if that is the case, why even have a "flip antenna" in the first place?
Curious.

It's just part of the simulation...

Only if you open up the case and remove the tiny little magnet...
