updating my nuvi 200

Sorry about this question but, where do i go to update the software (if it's even necessary), and to get the new maps?
Do i still have to purchase them?? I got this as a gift this past Christmas (12-07)

.

You update your unit firmware by downloading Garmin's WebUpdater software and running it with the unit attached to the computer with the USB cable.

If you want the new maps, you would need to purchase them. You can get them from your my.Garmin.com page or you can get them from some third party retailers like GPS City or TVNAV.

will i still need to

will i still need to purchase them since its been only a few months since i've had it??
I seen on here that some people have called garmin and they got the 08 maps for free because they had just gotten their gps

Typically, you would be eligible for a free update to the maps if you purchase a unit with the old maps AFTER the new maps are released.

The new maps were announced on March 1, 2008 and released officially on May 1, 2008.

Units purchased AFTER March 1, 2008 are potentially eligible for a free update. A unit purchased in December 2007 most likely would not be.

Those people who got the 2008 maps purchased their units with the v8 maps after the v2008 maps were released.

I'm seeing a trend here in some threads that people who didn't register their units until March or later are getting a free map update, regardless of when they got or first used the unit. I'm thinking that Garmin has no easy way of telling when you bought or started using it, so they use registration.. This is something they wouldn't want people to know since everyone would delay registering if they knew.
