What do you have your Backlight timer set on?
I have my Nuvi 350 set to Always On.

You didn't say what model gps you have. I have a 660 and my back light is set on 1 min. If you keep in on all the time without using a ac or 12 volt power cord you will run your batter down quite fast.

Never use it out of the car....
I never use my Nuvi 660 out of my car, so I don't even know what my backlight setting is!
I tried to use it for city walking, but found that it doesn't do as well as it does as a car navigation system.
Back Light
Oh Oh dumb me didn't pay attention to the whole post. I have used mine in the house and it does go out after one minute.
