A little unsatisfied with my Nuvi 360

I recently purchased a Nuvi 360, which I am finding myself a little disappointed with. The performance is great thus far, it's taken me where I want to go and got me there without fail.

The gripes I have with it as as fellows:
My father has a TomTom XL, which I thought was pretty cool from the start. I decided to get the Nuvi because all the reviews I read convinced me it was the way to go. However, I find that the Nuvi simply isn't as clear and plain as the TomTom. I think it's a lot easier to view where you are on the TomTom. It's plain, simple, and gives you just the right amount of information when you're driving. The Nuvi, on the other hand, I feel is very "cluttered" when it's taking you to your destination. I tried changing the map detail to least, although I don't really feel that it helped much.

Secondly, is there anyway to change the distance alerts? I haven't really drove with it much, but the times I have, I feel like the alert for when I need to make a turn is way too close to the street I need to turn on. Maybe that's just me.

Thirdly, why do I need to change the options for how I want my route calculated (avoid tolls, short distance, shortest time) before I enter my route? I like how the TomTom prompts you after you enter the destination (on a per-route basis).

Maybe I'm just nitpicking, or maybe it's because I have the TomTom as a basis for comparison. But overall, while I feel like this is a great navigational unit (as far as perfomance goes), for me, it just doesn't seem to sit well or shine like everyone else says it does.

Anyone else feel the same way?

TomTom uses Teleatlas maps,

TomTom uses Teleatlas maps, which is not as better as Garmin's map supplier in North America.

Comparison

I looked at Tom Tom before I bought a nuvi 350 and it didn't seem as intuitive as the Garmin. You don't have to use all the extra features to get started and master all the options.

Nuvi more accurate

I had a TomTom for about a week and took it back because the maps were so innacurate. I currently own a Nuvi and love it. Sure, some of the features on the TomTom were a lot nicer than those on (or missing from) my Nuvi but the fundamental purpose of a GPS unit is to get you where you want to go. All of the features in the world won't mean a thing if the unit gets you lost (and it did).

I love my Garmin NUVI750 and the only suggestion I can give is that you should have bought a Tom Tom if you thought it was so great. In my opinion there is no comparison as I have tried and read many reviews about both. Why do you think Garmin is rated number one by all GPS professional reviewers and TomTom normally comes out last in comparison between the three major manufacturers. You will get use to it...and no I do not work for Garmin.

A great Webpage that will explain who makes your map. http://www.gpsinformation.org/dale/mapmakers.htm

Want to see what goes into making a map
http://www.navteq.com/ click option 2

Product ................................... Vendor

Garmin switches between vendors

City Navigator North America______Navteq
City Select North America_________Navteq
Metroguide USA 4.0 and below____TeleAtlas
Metroguide USA 5.0 and above____Navteq
US Roads and Recreation________Tiger

Navigon products use Navteq

The Pharos Ostia product, Navman, and TomTom Navigator uses TeleAtlas maps in the USA.

Copilot from ALK uses Tiger data and then corrects it with customer feedback and satellite imagery.

Your GPSr is not listed, just got to the link who makes your maps above.

Haha, I already bought my unit, so I'm not worried about you working for Garmin and attempting to promote a product razz

Like I said in my original post, I commend Garmin on the actual performance of their product. I wouldn't want the TomTom for its navigational features. The nuvi's performance is awesome (from when I've used it so far). I just feel as though it could be a little more intuitive than it currently is, and a little more discernible when looking at the maps.

.

The latest (June) edition of Consumer Reports rates 39 GPS's from all makers. The top 5 are:

1) Garmin nuvi 7xx
2) Garmin nuvi 6xx
3) TomTom Go 9xx
4) Garmin nuvi 3xx
5) Magellan Maestro 4250

Because of its price, the nuvi 3xx is rated as a Best Buy.
