Key Features List for the Next generation Garmin Nuvi

There are some key features missing in the current generation of Nuvi's that would make me buy a new Garmin if they were added. I have a Nuvi 680 now that replaced a Streetpilot 2720. There are things on the StreetPilot I really miss.

Like the arrow that was above above the "next turn in XXX miles" box, to let you know to keep left/right.

Assuming Garmin reads our posts, what key features are important to you that would make you upgrade?

when telephone numbers are saved for your "favorites" on the Nuvi 350/360. What do you use, the asterisk.?

Key Features list for next generation of Garmin Nuvis

My key improvement would be to incorporate the innovations of the Navigon 7100. (The reality view and the lane assistant features.) I have not actually seen the Navigon but I have read several reviews and all say the same thing. The technology is amazing but the functionality falls short of expectations.
Personally I couldn't care less about having an MP3 player, photo viewer or the other insignificant features. First and foremost it is a navigation device.
If Garmin could take the Navigon innovations and add their superior expertise, I would most certainly make the switch from Tom Tom.

I agree about the photo

I agree about the photo viewer. I have used the MP3 and like it, but could live without it. I would hook my Ipod to the auxillary plugin. Here are a few changes that would be nice.

1. Update maps more frequently

2. A ding when it is time to turn (not that major of a deal, but would be nice)

3. Ability to delete or change loaded POI's you come across that are outdated

I'd simply be happy to see

I'd simply be happy to see Garmin join the rest of the 21st century and embrace USB 2 and ditch the 2 GB of internal memory.

A check ride ought to be like a skirt. Short enough to be interesting, but long enough to cover everything.

Along with all the other great suggestions...

I would really like to see adjustable distance alerts.

Telling me to turn right in .8 miles from the left lane going 75mph can sometimes be an issue...

Next turn

I'd like mine to say which drection is the next turn immediately after I make a turn so I can get into the correct lane sooner.

Nuvi does says next turn

My Nuvi 350 tells me the upcoming turn and the turn after that - as long as they are fairly close. So if I have a right turn and then 1/4 mile later there is a left turn, it says "Turn right at xx street, then turn left."

If that left turn is a fairly long way away, it does not do that. I don't know what the trigger is, but I would guess it is something like 1/2 mile or so.

Yes it does

Yes it does do that, but I want to know what the next turn is every time, not only when there is an immediate turn after the initial turn or make it a user configurable distance. I've found myself in the wrong lane a few times and missed my turn because of it. I'd rather not have to tap the top bar to see all the upcoming turns since that would take my attention off of the road and onto the GPS.

Agree it's not consistent enough

I agree that it is not completely consistent and also wish it did that more often. In urban driving, 1/2 mile warning may not be enough. I believe there is a speed component to this as well. At higher speeds, turn warnings are given at approximately .8, .3 and at the turn. At lower speeds, I may only get warnings at .2 and "at the turn". At very low speeds, I sometimes only get "at the turn" warnings. I have learned to glance at the screen frequently.

Tap lower right

I agree that the top bar is too distracting. Just tap the lower right button (distance till next turn) and it will tell you what direction and when the next turn is. Not perfect, but you get immediate notice and it is better than the list of all turns.

Larry ... Garmin Nuvi 650

Mute byutton

1. I want a mute button on top on the side or what ever the case maybe...so I can shut it up when I am on the phone etc instead of having to tap the volume screen and tap the mute.

2. A Veiw Map home feature on every menu page...I don't want to have to scroll back 5 times to get back to the map after I was just looking for the closest 7-11 on my route..

It's those changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes nothing remains quite the same. With all of our running and all of our cunning, If we couldn't laugh, we would all go insane.

Map Home Feature

I believe if you hold the back button down it will be jump back out to map screen or to the top screen.

Area code look up

I would like to see you be able to look up addresses by area codes.

Wish List

I would like the ability to organize my poi's in folders 3 and 4 deep.

My wish list

I agree in removing the picture viewer and mp3 player. One of my employees has the Navigon and the reality view is fantastic. Finding places and pois on it leaves something to be desired. Also, I would really like a tow truck vehicle icon, or a Corvette icon. smile

Back Button

Yes, if you keep pressing on the back button down for a couple of seconds, it will take you back to the View Map home page.

It was posted in a tip some time ago and has really been a great tip.

Key Features List for the Next generation Garmin Nuvi

Would it have to be the next generation Garmin Nuvi or could it be software or firmware updates to the current edition?

Anyway, I have a Garmin StreetPilot 2730 and I just bought a Garmin Nuvi 750 that I will probably return. It works very well, but I do miss a few things from the SP2730 that the 750 doesn't have. For example, I have the SP 2730 configured to display the approximate current location while routing. I find this to be very handy. It has a number of choices of what can be displayed in those tabs. I also have current time, direction of travel, distance to next turn, ETA, etc. I know that the Nuvi 750 has the Where Am I feature, but it works separate from other functionality. Not everyone would like the tabs on the side, so make it an option.
