Longest distance before next turn/fork in road?

When creating a route on a GPS device, what is the longest possible distance before the next turn or keep left/keep right instruction? For example, when I drive down to my parents' house near Daytona Beach, the next instruction on I-95 south after passing Fayetteville, NC is about 385 miles away in the Jacksonville, FL vicinity. (I forget if it was at the intersection with I-285 or I-10).

??

Not sure what you are asking, but I have had the unit tell be to drive well over 300 miles to my next turn if there are no other directions it needs to issue.

Dave, I had my nuvi plot a route from the Lower 48 to Whitehorse, Yukon. One instruction was to turn right on Robert Service Way in 871 miles. I bet a route to Delta Junction AK from the Lower 48 could have distance of over 1000 miles before the next turn.

Then again, maybe even a longer stretch can be calculated for an east-west route along one of the Atlantic to Pacific Interstates.

Longest?

I've had my gps tell me to drive 24,901 miles to my next exit, which was 1/2 mile away! Guess it wanted me to take the scenic route!

You turn

Wow, so a GPS will very strongly & literally follow your choices when you tell it to avoid U-turns...

Re: Longest Distance

24,901.463 miles is the the measurement of the Earth's circumference at the equator.

That was input from the oil companies! LOL

Interesting ride

It would have been an interesting ride, but, this truck don't float!

And the fuel! 24,901/7.5*$4.45= $14,774.59. Now add that to your grocery bill when you go shopping!

My C330

will tell me long distance turns if I'm going out of town. It is usually just a direction change on the highway I'm on.

Not doing anything worth a darn.

Actually, Haines AK is further

Then again, maybe even a longer stretch can be calculated for an east-west route along one of the Atlantic to Pacific Interstates.

Just for fun, I decided to test out some routes to see what long stretches came up:

1. If driving from the Lower 48 to Alaska, there is a 969-mile turn-free stretch from Dawson Creek, BC to Haines Jct, YT. After making a right turn to continue up the Alaska Highway, there is another turn-free stretch of 493 miles to Fairbanks. (I thought there would be a turn at Delta Junction, but apparently there isn't.)

2. Even better, if you select Haines, AK as your destination, the turn-free stretch from Dawson Creek is 1116 miles! To get this routing, though, you have set up your GPS receiver to "avoid" ferries, since there is a much shorter route that takes you to Skagway, AK, where you then take a ferry to Haines.

3. For routes from eastern USA to Seattle, there is an 832-mile turn-free section of I-90 between Dakota, MN and Buffalo, WY. If taking the more northerly route, there is a 1030-mile turn-free stretch along I-94 and I-90 from Albertville, MN to Butte, MT. Finally, the turn-free "home stretch" from Butte to Seattle is 587 miles.

4. Along I-5, there is a 544-mile turn-free stretch from downtown Portland to the I-5/I-505 split north of Sacramento.

5. Along I-80, the stretch from Reno (jct US 395) to Salt Lake City (jct I-15) is 515 miles. The stretch from the I-84 junction in eastern Utah to the I-76 junction in Nebraska is 534 miles.

6. Along I-70, the turn-free stretch from the I-15 junction in Utah to the Denver area is 493 miles.

I'm going to test out some more later, particularly in remote areas of Canada.
