How do you use Mapsource?

I have a Nuvi 350. I only use Mapsource to transfer maps from pc to GPS. Other than that, the function I want to use most is the route planning on pc and transfer the planned route to GPS. But it seems Nuvi 350 doesn't accept Mapsource's route.

Do you folks find any other uses of Mapsource?

Thanks.

Mapsource

With a 350 - that's about it. You can plan routes in Mapsource and print them out, but to load them to a device, you'll need a different series of device.

Add/edit Favorites, preview routes

I have a Nuvi 350 too. MapSource allows me to add and edit Favorites. It can be used to load your Favorites and then resave them as POI files. And vice-versa. Handy for taking those on the fly "where am I" favorites and converting them to POI's.

I also use it to preview the route that my Nuvi would pick on a longer trip. I can then force it elsewhere by adding and testing additional waypoints. While the route itself will not download to the Nuvi, the individual waypoints will and you can number them and select them sequentially while you're travelling.

Not as elegant or useful as having a model that supports Routes, but it allows some very basic functionality towards that goal.

Mapsource

I think that I would like to use Mapsource. Where do I buy it? I bought a 260 on March 25th, should it have come with it?

You can plan the routes in

You can plan the routes in MapSource and then create Waypoints at critical junctions, transfer the waypoints as either a custom POI (my choice) or send directly to the GPSr as Favorites. You can then navigate the waypoints in sequence to travel your custom route, even though the 350 doesn't support the function.

I use Mapsource to plan trips, create waypoints, and create custom .gpx POI files.

You have to contact Garmin support to get the MapSource DVD. Be persistent and you should get it for free. Tell them you need it for trip and waypoint planning. I did that and they sent it for free with no questions.

Once again, more knowledgable folks, if I'm in error in any way, please correct me.

The cheapest way to get Mapsource is by buying Garmin's Trip & Waypoint Manager, about $30:

http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/tripandwaypoint...

But Mapsource also comes with other maps, like Topo USA (full retail $117, but much cheaper on Amazon and other sites):

http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/topous.jsp

So if you have a desire for other maps, don't buy the Trip & Waypoint Manager. Simply buy the map you want and Mapsource will be part of it. And if you end up buying more than one map, all will be incorporated into your computer's single installation of Mapsource.

You may want to look elsewhere in this forum. I think I've read that some folks have contacted Garmin and gotten a free copy of the Trip & Waypoint Manager sent to them. Many folks believe the basic Trip & Waypoint Manager should come bundled with the nuvis but it's not. But then, one may also think that a hard-copy of the nuvi Owner's Manual should come with a nuvi, too wink

.

You can get MapSource without the maps for free by downloading the Garmin Training Center and updating the MapSource version.

Step 1:
Download and Install "Garmin Training Center"
http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99...

Step 2:
Download and Install the latest Mapsource Update
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209

It should be noted that the nuvi line does not come with MapSource. As has been noted, many people have gotten it for free from Garmin by politely asking and stating that they wish to use it to "manage their favorites".

How do you transfer...

How do you actually transfer a gpx or waypoint from garmin, as a poi or csv file?

Getting MapSource

I have been using MapSource for 5 years. I started using it with my Ique3600.

When I purchased my Nuvi 750 (which comes with preloaded software only (CNNA NT), I called the Garmin Tech Support and just asked to send me a copy of the CNNA NT for backup purposes.

They said OK and did and gave me my unlock code free.

The DVD that they send has MapSource on it already.

This is just like when you buy most computers now you don't receive any software disks with it, But if you call them they will send you a complete set of software disks free just for asking.

Just a note:
Unless you have the CityNavigator North American NT Maps already with the unlock code, MapSource is useless. Because MapSource with out MAPS loaded into it does not do anything.

the route preview can be done in Google map too

I'm more used to preview route in online maps such as Google. I found the UI in mapsource is not as friendly as in Google Earth or Google Map.

I have allways used

I have allways used mapsource to trasfer all my maps and waypoints to my Garmin, will it also transfer all my POI's to my device? This is my first time using POI files, so I'm a little unsure about how to use them and if Mapsource plays any role... Thanks

.

MapSource will transfer Waypoints that become Favorites on the GPS unit. It doesn't transfer POIs as Custom POIs.

You must use POI Loader to load Custom POIs.

I Use it to find Coordinates

You can also use Mapsource to find a coordinate for you. You can type in and address, intersection, and voila, it will give you the lat and long. for you to create a CSV file.

Hi All, I ordered the North

Hi All,

I ordered the North America 2009 Map upgrade from Garmin last week. It is a complimentry copy since I just received my Nuvi. It is interesting that everyone says Garmin does not have Disc's but Garmin said they mailed it Monday. The other thing is Garmin says the new 2009 Map Disc will give me the capability of loading map on my PC, not just uploading the upgrades to my Nuvi therefore eliminating the need for MapSource. It this true?

Easy to use Mapsource with POI loader for Custom POIs

Save your Waypoints that are in Mapsource as a GPX file and then use POI loader to load your new GPX file as Custom POIs to your GPS. It's very easy to do this in Mapsource.

Jimmie10,

You must have misunderstood them. The update disc will allow you to load mapsource to your pc thereby eliminating the need to purchase it separately.

You can use it

...to create the POI's and save them in .gpx format, but you have to load them with the POI loader. Hopefully one day Garmin will add full POI functionality to MapSource, but at the moment it will only load waypoints into your Favorites area.

I use it for routes

I currently have a 76CSx. I create routes in Map Source and send them directly to my GPS. My daughter lives in Montana and, when we go to visit, my wife will plan different routes there and back so we see new parts of the country. I then put the route she wants to travel into Map Source and send it to my unit.

I've been using the hand held device for several years and have been considering getting an automotive unit now as well. I'm looking at either the Nuvi 750 or 760. I believe one can transfer routes to those. If not, I'll likely just stick with what I have. To me, that is an extremely important aspect of owning a GPS.

Thank you GP. I now understand. The update to the Garmin went well and the MapSource software is now fully functional.

According to the Garmin site the ROUTES = 0 for these 2 models, which means "no" to your question.
Sorry!

Can not download from Mapsource to NUVI 750

I have a Gramin Nuvi 750 and I have created a route by first creating a CSV file, then turing into the proper file (.gpsx?) so I can upload it into Mapsource. I have all the way points in Mapsource and then created a route. It is all routed fine in Mapsource. All seemed to work fine...but for the life of me I CAN NOT get it into my garmin GPS device. I hit the 'transfer to device' icon and it says it is transferring, but when I turn the device on -- it is not there. I can transfer from device to PC but not the other way around. Am I not saving the file in the proper place? Please help! -- very frustrated...

Xfer routes to 750

KKneafsey,

The routes that you transfer to the 750 will under:

TOOLS>>>MY DAYA>>>Import Routes from File

Just remember that you can only have 10 active routes under Where TO>>>ROUTES

If there are more than 10 routes there you will have to delete at least 1 to be able to import another route

Mapsource usage.

I use Mapsourse to create custome POIs or waypoints and then upload into my Nuvi with the POI loader. Often the location is already in the Mapsource database, but if not, it is easy to add.

No, there isn't. You will need to contact Garmin and request a DVD. They normally will provide you one at no cost.

That said, wait for the update to be released and request that, if you are eligible. From that you should be able to load the mapsource onto your computer.

Re: DVD & update

Thanks, that is what I was coming to a conclusion of.
I`ll use Google Earth till then.On a side note
I think the MSN Direct feature will be of little use
to me unless they come up with way more features.
I would never purchase as it stands now.

"Quando Omni Flunkus Moritati" Garmin Nüvi 680

Please Remember

You should get a free update to the 2009 mapset, BUT, remember that you cannot plan "routes" on Mapsource, and transfer them to your Nuvi. Only the 7XX series and above will "accept" routes from Mapsource. There are several ways around this handicap, which are addressed in separate threads on this site.

Cheers...... Joel

Office Locations

I recently accepted a promotion at work which means I'll be supporting 24 different locations spread out over the northern third of California. While waiting for my Nuvi to arrive, I geocoded all of the addresses and made waypoints in Mapsource. The unit arrived this morning and I just sent the office locations from Mapsource to the Nuvi. Gotta love it. smile
