nuvi 250 firmware update

I received a firmware update while on the road today for my nuvi 250, which kinda surprised me, because i thought you only updated your firmware by using the web updater program.Have anyone had an update like that before and i'm trying to find out what was included in the new update.I've checked the Garmin site but can't find any info on what was in the update. The new firmware update is 3.60.

What advised you?

What notice did you receive that this had taken place? By what method do you believe this update was delivered?

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

I seriously doubt that you

I seriously doubt that you got a firmware update when not connected to the computer. That is the only way that I know of to get an update. Perhaps it was something else. I guess you can't remember the message? Does MSN get update via sats?

I don't think this is possible.

Nuvi 250 Firmware update

My Nüvi 250 is running on software version 3.60 and the update was obtained through Webupdater. I can't see how you can get the update otherwise.

Maybe

Maybe it was only when you rebooted your nuvi on the road that the new update took effect...if he downloaded it at home on the computer, but didn't cycle the nuvi until on the road it would appear to update on its own.

Almost certain

Virtually certain that this is what happened. The unit just installed the previously downloaded update when turned on. There is no other functionality in the 250 that would allow it to update on the fly.

It sounds strange but its true

I last updated my garmin a few weeks ago using the webupdater program and since then i've been using it often.Yesterday we came back into town after spending the weekend out.It was a 2 1/2 hr drive. The gps was on all the way, no rebooting or anything. Then while driving through the city i heard a beep, then saw a message on the screen saying downloading new firmware. It had a percentage count and all.And as far as i know, you don't get a percentage count on the gps screen during an update. It got me puzzled as well because i never knew you got an update like that, but it said it was updating the firmware.I checked my firmware version and its 3.60.My wife was driving and she can verify it because she saw it happen too.

Version 3.60

I've have the version 3.60 firmware on my 200 for several weeks, if not months.

Yes

3.60 was already available when I got my Nuvi 260 for Christmas. If he updated anytime in the last 3 months, he already had 3.60. I don't know what he was seeing, but I don't see anyway he got a software update on a 2xx Nuvi without being connected to something. It isn't capable of receiving anything but the satellite signal for the GPSr, and I have never heard or read anything that indicates that it is even possible to receive any updates that way. rolleyes

Ok, let's have a little reality check.

Fact 1: GPS receivers only can receive signals from the GPS satellites. (Leaving traffic out of the argument since the 250 doesn't have that capability.) They don't have Wi-Fi or any other means of receiving information.

Fact 2: Garmin (nor any other GPS manufacturer) does not control the GPS satellites. The government does. Thus Garmin is not capable of sending firmware updates to the GPS unit from the GPS satellites.

Fact 3: The nuvi line is not capable of updating the firmware without being connected to a computer and a program being run on that computer loading the firmware to the unit.

What if at some point mike

What if at some point mike ran his webupdater on his pc with the gps connected via usb and at some point the update that was downloaded did not take. Is still possible at all that a mechanism in his unit failed but later restored whatever it found and continued with the remnants of what was downloaded and installed? Far fetch but is it impossible?

That's actually the MOST LIKELY scenario.

nuvi 250 firmware update

The same thing happened to me yesterday, I was shocked as I thought there was no way to recieve a firmware update via GPS, but I have not hooked my GPS up to my PC in 8 months!!
