Route modification

I inserted a route on my C340 from home in Surprise, AZ to the south rim of the Grand Canyon.
Getting started early in the am the traffic was bad so I took another way to I17 northbound to miss the traffic. This brought me maybe 20 miles north from the original entrance to I17N.
Returning about three days later (we did not use the gps at the canyon) I hit go Home and it routed me back through my "get out of traffic route" that I took on the way up.
Is this normal? Does the receiver remember the original route? I can see good and bad points with this....

Probably Not

I don't believe that it was remembering, but was selecting a different route back than it selected coming. This is exactly what happens when i go visit my son. The route shown there is different than the route shown to go back home.
This happens every time.

I have speculated that the routing is trying to get me to an Interstate highway as soon as possible, but have no way to prove it.

Try going selecting the routes again and i bet they are the same as what you experienced.

My "get out of traffic"

My "get out of traffic" route was much longer in getting to the interstate and much longer coming home. The modified route saved me time because of traffic going but not on the way home.

Remember that the units also

Remember that the units also generally prefers right turns and will route that way if possible. I have had it route one way and when I select an alternate route, it comes up with a routing that is "slower" by 1-2 minutes (calculation only) but it actually ends up being quicker. This always happens on I-10 in Phoenix, when I usually take the 101 and a surface street to get to work.
