Firmware automatically updated or backdated while driving

I remember a discussion here a couple of months ago in which someone claimed that his GPS was automatically updated while he was driving---no computer, no Webupdater involved. The conclusion of the discussion I think was that it was not possible since the satellites are owned by the Defense Department, not Garmin.

Today when I was driving and just reaching my destination, a screen came up on my GPS that said "Updating Firmware" and it read off percentages of the update downloaded, getting up to 100% in less than a minute. After it was done, it had a notice that the download was completed and an OK button for me to push. I didn't get to push it right away because my hands were busy turning the wheel and it quickly went away without me pushing it.

I just checked my GPS system information and compared it with what I used to have (recorded in this thread http://www.poi-factory.com/node/10897, 9th post down). I used to have audio version 2.30 and now I have audio version 2.20. Everything else remained the same.

Does anyone know what is going on here?

firmware automacticaly update'n

It seems strange that this is possible, but what do I know?

.

The Audio version corresponds to the voice you have selected and isn't related to the firmware version.

I tried the British English version for one day, but I've otherwise just used the American English version. So I still don't understand what happened.

Did it update?

The inlaw got a 250 when first turned on it said downloading and took around 15-20 minutes to complete. Mine a 360 or my dads a 250 never had this when first turned on. I'm guessing it was some kind of update , any thoughts?

Audio Version

Well, a strange thing happened to my GPS.
After reading this post, I thought I would do a little test. I had American English selected as the language.
I went to wrench/settings/system/about.
Audio ver was 2.30.
I changed the language to Italiano then checked the Audio Version again. It changed to 2.20.
Then I changed it back to American English and I checked the audio version again, and now it was 2.20 for American English, even though it was 2.30 when I started checking.
If I change to British English or Espanol, then check audio version it is 2.30.
But if I change back to American English it now is always 2.20.
Not sure why this happened or if it is even a problem, but maybe someone could check what audio version they have with American English or other languages, and see if the same thing happens as I desrcibed.

Thanks

.

Good test. That must be how I got from American English 2.30 to 2.20, when I tried British English that one time (it was not my cup of tea smile). I guess we're SOL unless we do a Webupdater. I wonder what diff there is between 2.20 and 2.30.

That makes the automatic update even more mysterious.

My experiences with "Updating Firmware"

With my c530 I experience the problem with "Updating Firmware". It is a quirk with my GPSr and I am beyond the warranty period. What happens is, occassionally (once every few weeks), when my unit is booting up, it goes into this UPDATING firmware mode, says it is complete, and then starts up. However, I can no longer get satelite connection. I need to remove power from the system, turn the unit off, and restart. Everything is fine until it happens again.

You are correct

As far as we know, the only thing OTA (over the air) that the gps receives is traffic data and satellite data. All garmin updates have to come from the usb cable. Occasionally it appears that MSN will send some updates OTA, but only for their content. I have never seen it say "updating firmware" when this happens.
