Nuvi 200

A friend of mine purchased a Nuvi 200, and I am not familiar with it, since I have a C340. There is nothing in the manual about a USB cable to plug into a PC so you can load POI files and charge the unit, but it does have the ability to do that, doesn't it? Will it also function as a mass storage unit? If so, does it require a "compatible" cable, or will any USB cable with a mini USB plug work fine?

Yes

Yes, you can do all those things with an ordinary USB to USB mini cable. Check out the Garmin FAQ's hosted here for more information: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/6656

when I plug this into a PC with a standard USB cable

When I plug this into a PC with a standard USB cable I just see a Garmin logo with an arrow pointing up.

Is the unit charging at this point?

Do I need the specific cable from Garmin to get the unit recognized for registering and checking for updates on the the Garmin web site?

When I plug this into a PC with a standard USB cable

I have a 200W and when it's plugged into the PC, mine displays the Garmin logo and then there's a small image of a PC Tower w/ a cable plugged into it w/ another device (supposedly a gps) plugged into the other end of the cable. When this little icon shows is when my gps is charging. But I can get this display whether I'm plugged in at home on my PC, or at work on a MAC using a generic cable... so I don't believe you need a specified Garmin cable.

Standard USB cable

The USB cable for PC communications is a standard mini USB, but the AC and DC USB power cables are Garmin specific, I think.

That has been discussed, at length, in another thread.

I am sure someone will post those URLs momentarily.

Power cable

The power cable is Garmin specific. I have a Motorola cell phone which uses a mini USB jack to charge the phonne from the car charger - but as soon as you plug in the Garmin (in an effort to have one less charger rattling around) you get the GPS/Computer icon as discussed above. I think it's something to do with the current ...

I believe if you wish to use

I believe if you wish to use your unit while it is charging you need the Garmin AC adapter. I tried a Motorola AC adapter and it would charge but couldn't use it while charging. I think it does have something to do with the output of the charger. I have ordered the Garmin charger and it is to be here today. Will advise if it does work different than the Motorola charger...

Try this

My power switch trick might work with non-Garmin power supplies.
