iPhone Navigation

I've got a friend who just got an iPhone and he tells me that he's got navigation on it. Does anyone have an iPhone that can verify? If so, how does it compare to a Garmin or other? Can anyone shed any light?

Hi wegasque,

Specifically, turn-by-turn directions generated through Google, in text format.

Re: iPhone Navigation

Yes, it’s true, up to a point. I have an iPhone and you can in fact find your corrent location, have a map drawn with the route highlighted to your destination, and also obtain text directions.

The catch is that it is not a true GPS device. It triangulates your position using available cell phone towers as opposed to the satellite system used by GPS devices. I’ve tested it on several locations and it is surprisingly accurate. Great if you’re walking in a city and get lost or in a situation where you need to call for emergency assistance and need to give your location to the responders.

One of the other really neat things it can do is once you have found your current location, you can then have it locate a particular business within the area of your location, i.e., find your location and then type in pizza. It will show you all the pizza locations on your location map along with their name, address, and phone. Way Cool!!
