Nuvi 650 POI internal loading problem

sad Today I tried to load some POIs to the internal file on my Nuvi 650. I removed the SD card and proceeded with the POILoader and loaded quite a bunch. It would not load, an error message came up stating not enough space. Hmmmm, the drive was empty, how could that be, no space? So I thought too much was being loaded at once, so went to only one POI file, not that big of file. Same thing, wanted me to send the error report to clipboard and then send to Garmin support. What do you think is wrong? I have loaded POIs from other sights mentioned on POI Factory so I believe they are safe places to visit. Any help would be greatly appreciated. sad

Well, I would double check to ensure that you are actually selecting the nuvi itself in POI Loader.

And I would check to verify exactly how much free space is available on your nuvi. Obviously, the drive isn't empty as it contains your maps and voices and vehicle files. But unless you've done something odd, you should still have enough space to load POIs to the unit.

Typically, I have found that I can get between 6,000 and 10,000 POI locations per megabyte of space.

I can't vouch for files that you might have gotten from other sites, but since Custom POI files are basically text files, it would stand to reason that they should for the most part be safe.

Are you sure that the file you are loading is a valid Custom POI file?

And lastly, I'm not sure why you removed the SD card. What does that have to do with the process?

I selected G:

for the Nuvi drive to put the files in. How do I check for free space? It should have a lot as there are no custom POIs in it. I don't believe I've done any thing to alter the Nuvi. The last file I loaded was Starbucks downloaded from POI Factory. And I took out the SD card so the POI would go directly into the Garmin. I used to have a pop up that asked where I wanted the files to go but I checked the box and it has disappeared. Maybe that altered the nuvi? I asked in another post how to get it back without results. sad

Ok, you need to verify that G: is actually your nuvi drive.

There are other things on your nuvi drive besides Custom POIs. So it may or may not have enough space but it probably does. You might be selecting a different drive.

With your nuvi connected to your computer with the USB cable, open My Computer and look at the drives listed there. Right click on the nuvi drive and see how much space it says that you have available.

When you run POI Loader, there will be drop down list asking you where you want to place the data.

Here's what mine looks like.

I believe the pop up was your computer asking you what you wanted to do with the drive. I don't believe that it was related to POI Loader.

Oh wow!

It says that I have a capacity of 1.38GB and I have used 1.38GB with only 184 KBs left! How can that be? I'm completely confused!

Well, your maps take up about 1GB.

Voice files are about 14MB each.

Vehicle files are about 1.2MB each.

How many POI locations have you loaded previously?

What files are listed and what are their sizes?

Different units have different drive sizes.

And I tried

POILoader to remove files and it said all have been removed. How about a re-boot of some type to remove all added files and return to factory specs, would that work or make it worse?

Easy with the resetting talk. Slow down. That's probably not necessary.

What size is the poi.gpi file shown on the drive?

Have you added any pictures, MP3s, voices, or vehicles to the unit?

Vehicle files

are 18.3MB, voice files are 329MB. If I dump some voices and remove some vehicles that should open up some space. Any other suggestions? I really appreciate all your help. smile

POI file shows 0 KB, nothing in the file at all.

SD Card

Why the reluctance to use that SD card? Solves everything without extraordinary efforts to make space internally.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

I would recommend backing the entire nuvi drive up to your computer. It will take about 30 - 45 minutes.

Then you can safely delete whatever voices you don't need. You can alway reload them later if you need them. Same with the vehicles.

Then you should be fine as your Custom POI files like will end up only needing a few megabytes or so.

And no problem with the help. You are welcome.

Be sure that you DO NOT do anything to the .IMG files as these are your maps. If you aren't sure what a file is, don't touch it.

No reluctance with the SD card

I just wanted to put California/Arizona/Oregon Rest Stops and Pilot/Loves gas stations on the internal file since we travel a lot. I could have the alerts on there too and I wouldn't have to reload them all the time. It sounded like a good idea but I guess maybe not!!

You are completely fine loading the Custom POIs to the unit.

Oh Boy!

now I'm in trouble. How do you go about backing up the files?

Just go back to your My Computer and copy the WHOLE garmin folder into a folder on your hard drive. Just like copying any other file.

Thank You MM

very much. I removed all foreign languages but English, Australian and British, cause you do need a change once in a while, and most vehicles, the RV will be do just fine! I freed up some space and put what I needed internally. Now back to the SD card for all the rest.

Thanks again, you are very helpfull and always there when we need you.

Great. Glad you got it worked out.

You can also remove all the help files in foreign languages, any .jpegs, .mp3s & .aa (audible Audio) files that you don't want.
