Bummer! (read that Garmin 650 is discontinued)

Just read that the Garmin 650 has been discontinued by Garmin as of January 2008. sad Hmmmm! Just bought one! Love it! I guess that the technology is getting so much better with every passing day that what you buy today will be outdated tomorrow with a better unit!! I suspect that Garmin will stand by their product even though it is a discontinued model. What are your thoughts? smile

BUMMER

they sure will if something does go wrong with it they will repair or replace that is what i was told by Garmin!

--
Everyday is a GREAT day :)

For as long as they can

For as long as they can repair a unit they will. When it besomes too expensive to repair the 650, they'll upgrade you to one of the latest models out there.

We have to do that all the time where I work with computers. If the machine a user works on dies or crashes and it's too old or would take too long to fix, we replace it with a spare machine which is 1 or models behind our current model.

Where did you read this at.

Where did you read this at, I just looked on the Garmin site and it is not listed as a discontinued product, I would assume that as long as it is under warrenty that they will honor the product.

I just did a Google search

I just did a Google search using "Garmin 650 discontinued" and got a couple of hits where retailers say that the model is discontinued -- including the GPS Store and Wal-mart sites.

Rats -- it is a great, no nonsense model IMO.

I don't believe it 'til

I won't believe that it is discontinued until Garmin lists it as such. I am wondering if it is discontinued by the retailer and not Garmin. Retailers DO discontinue carrying certain models.

I wouldn't hold my breath. Garmin has not yet listed the Nuvi 650 as a model on their "Updates and Downloads" page.

Be on the lookout for Bargains!

Having the unit discontinued is not so bad, That means that places like Walmart will have them for ridiculously low prices! And who cares if there is a "better" model out now if you saved 75% the older model. From most posts here, people love their NUVI 6XX. I certainly like my 660! Any anyhow, new models do not necessarily come with that much better specs, so waiting for an other generation before upgrading is usually not a bad idea...

Hopefully you are right and it was discontinued by the retailer and not Garmin. I read it at a web site for a retailer and looked it up on the Garmin site and it's not listed as being discontinued. So I would speculate that the retailer is considering not stocking it anymore.

They'll support it for a While

My GPSmap 60CS is pretty old (by today's standards) and they quickly repaired it for me just last month. I'm sure the 650 will be taken care of for quite a while. OK, maybe no new software updates, but they'll help you keep it running in it's current state.

What is the difference between the 650 and the 660? I have a 660 and love it but might be interested in a 650 if I can find one at bargain prices!

the 650 does not have bluetooth or fm transmitter

660 also discontinued

I read somewhere that the 66o is also discontinued..

amazon has them on sale now at 330 "While quantities last"

.

Probably the 700 series is considered a replacement for the 600 series. I've seen them for about the same price and they do more. It's hard to see why anyone would choose a 6xx over a 7xx.

It would be interesting to

It would be interesting to know what Garmin's long term plans are. They seem to have way too many models out these days.

bad!

bad!

On Sale

Guess that's why Costco had such a good Christmas sale price. Oh well, most models only seem to be in production a couple of years anyway. My 2720 was discontinued a while back, but, I can still get new maps and there isn't anything wrong with it.

Unless it breaks, or, Garmin comes out with significantly better routing, I'll be using it for a very long time.

Seems as if it is human nature that a larger number is better. Hence, the 7xx is got to be better because its just out and a larger number .

Discontinued Models

I have a IQUE 3600. It has been discontinued for about 3 years. I still get great results from Tech Support for it. They came up with 2 software versions for it since it was discontinued.

I wouldn't worry about a unit being discontinuesd
They will still support it, just not build anymore new ones.

"Eternal" - What are you an other bot?

What's up with this account,

All it posts are meaningless stuff like "Bad" or "same" or other meaningless sentences...

I disagree with dminz

New models are not necessarily better if you do a cost/benefit comparison. Take your example of a 660 and a 760. The 760 has a shorter batter life (5 vs 7 hrs for the 660) and does not come with any traffic receiver (MSN or otherwise). Sure, it has improved features but are they worth the 40%+ difference if you buy a 760 with traffic receiver?

Price I got from amazon:
660 with traffic receiver is $340
760 at $450 plus the GTM 21 traffic receiver (not avail yet at amazon) for about $100 of more for a total of at least $550

.

I guess you are correct. I compared the 650 to the 750 which are closer in price and I know nothing about the accessories that come with them. I suppose you are talking about the traffic receiver accessory, which I wouldn't be interested in. New models ARE often expensive when they first come out and then quickly drop in price. I like the 750 which is about $350 now, but will probably be at least $100 less in a couple of years when I am ready for a new GPS.

Today's hero is tommorrow's clown

Its all marketing and the speed of technology. I sort of chuckle when someone asks if they should wait for the next model of something to buy it. Sure, wait. And a short time later it'll be replaced again. As long it works for you, its not really obsolete. Unless of course you have to own the latest and greatest of a product.

I have not found the 7XX close to this price. Or you would be correct...

From Costco:

$299.99 After $100 Off
Garmin Nüvi 650 GPS
4.3" Touch Screen Display
Turn-by-Turn Directions

$299.99
Item # 236897

Depends

on what you mean by close. Cnet.com shows the cheapest prices on the 750 are $344 incl shipping. I hadn't looked at the 650 price for awhile. They have come down since the last time I looked, maybe because of close-out, and the 750 has stayed about the same.

Check out Reseller Ratings: http://www.resellerratings.com/store/86th_Street_Photo_Video... gave 86th Street Photo a customer rating of 0.16 on a 0-10 scale. Probably one of the worst ratings I have seen. I highly recommend visiting resellerratings.com to check out a seller that you are unfamiliar with. I'm a camera buff too, so I remember hearing their name numerous times in the camera forums.

Thanks for that website link. I buy on-line extensively and never heard of them. I've bought several times from buydig.com and never had a problem, but never checked them out. In another thread here someone complained about buydig. So I just checked them out: 8.95. Makes .16 seem really terrible.

Look at number of reviews

Normally you would like to see at least 100 reviews. Also make sure that you read reviews in the past 30 days. Sometimes service goes down hill in a big hurry...

Normally anything over a 6 would probably be ok, because if you get lower than that half the folks think there a MAJOR problems...

I bought mine for $280 about a month ago from HSN.com

I've had my 650 for over a year now and have been very happy with it. I'm pretty sure they will be supporting it as some of the later 6xx models use the same technology, just newer features.
