Road No Longer Exist

Does anyone know how to file a report for roads that no longer exist so they can be updated when the new map software becomes available. The road I am referring to has not been used in over 10 years so I would think the location should be already updated but it is not as of the 2008 software update from Garmin.

.

You can report map errors directly to Navteq who supplies the data to Garmin.

Thanks for the link

Thanks for the link. I was able to provide the Information to Navteq.

Dead End POI

I'm still wondering if anyone is interested in a Dead End POI list seeing that Map updates may take up to a year.

Clarification?

I asked for clarification on your other post on this subject, but you never responded.

Re: Clarification?

I guess what I was thinking would be something in a similar vein to the redlight camera poi. When you get close to a road closed that the GPS dosent know about, the GPS will warn you same as it does as you approach a redlight camera.

OK . . .

Copying my two posts from the other thread:

"I've never heard of such a POI file in my limited time here. However, It might be an extremely useful file if there are many such situations. Roads that have been blocked/closed and those having gates (one was mentioned the other day) might be included with a very long distance alert. Thus, as long as your calculated route was going to take you that way, you'd get an alert early enough to look for an alternative route."

"Since you are an active two-star member, are you asking about the methodology of building a POI or looking for recommendations on how to get information about closed roads that still show as open on most maps?"

Much simpler than that...

All I am asking is if there is an active interest across the user base for this type of POI.

I'm happy to start it, but it has no real value if others are not interested in contributing further than the 3 locations that I am currently thinking of.

.

Just be aware of the limitation based upon the manner in which the Garmin alerts work.

1. They don't work as avoidances.

2. They don't work as a radius but rather as an "along the road/route" alert.

3. They only will sound if you are traveling on the road on which the alert is located and you are traveling in the direction of the POI and if the POI is located sufficiently close to the road (typically 50 feet).

4. You can get more control over the alerts by using a properly formatted GPX file.

Check out Phil's great guide for more information about alerts.

Gated communities too

That would actually be nice. When I first got my Nuvi and tried to route to a buddies house I was routed through a gated community. I was lucky the gates were open.

GPX

Ok. Looking to give this a try w/ GPX format. Tried PoiEdit, and it seems kind of "light". I have no problem building a GPX file by hand, but don't see a concise schema to follow.

Basically I am interesting in knowing the format of the proximity alerts (the xml tags) inside a point record.

Anyone orient me in the right direction?

Check out Phil's GeePeeEx site.

Also, you can find the XML specification in the Help File of POI Loader.

If all you want to know is what the tags look like, the simplest way is to open a POI GPX with a proximity alert using " NOTEPAD ".
