Will Garmin discontinue the Nuvi 260 within a year?

Another post noted that Garmin announced new Nuvi 205 and 255s will come out this spring. The 255 appears to have all the capabilities and more than the 260, except it has a battery with one hour less of life.

The 255 will have shaded elevation maps, a supposedly quicker processor (333 Mhz), the ability to store satellite locations to shorten calculation times, the "Where Am I" emergency feature (showing nearest gas station, hospital), FM traffic compatibility, and MSN Direct compatibility.

Both have maps of all of North America and TTS, which were the two reasons I opted for the 260 over the 250 about two weeks ago. Yes, despite this post, I must admit that I just bought the 260 through Amazon for $249. If I did not plan some trips in the near future, I would likely just wait for the 255 to come out and go down to $255 around holiday time.

Seeing as the new model number (255) is lower than 260, yet the features are clearly greater, how long do you think it will be before Garmin stops producing the 260?

I predict that the 260 will be out of production this year and unavailable in about a year.

Don't live for tomorrow

Sounds that you are not to sure about the purchase you made, I got the feeling you want to return it...

Then you will wait for the 255 to come out and then wait some more for the price to drop...

In the mean time me and my 260 are going in May for a 10000 miles round trip from Florida to Alaska, at my age I learned not to wait for the latest thing, if you do you will be waiting forever.

Just remember that a year after the 255 comes out the 257 will, with more bells and whistles.

Is the computer you are posting on still being made?

And? Maybe it will be discontinued in a year. So?

My car model was discontinues a LONG time ago. My iPod is no longer being made by Apple. My home computer is no longer being made. Same for my PDA. Ditto on my digital Camcorder and my digital camera. Funny thing is, they all still work, work as well as they did when I bought them (well maybe not the car) and the features they still have are still working as they did when I got them.

I personally can not afford to replace all those things on a yearly basis. However if you feel the 255 makes your 260 look like garbage and your budget, unlike mine, is unlimited, feel free to upgrade as soon as the 255 is available. Let us know how you like it.

Re: Don't live for tomorrow

Good points. I probably overstated my concerns, which really aren't a big deal. The 260 does what I need it to (navigate), and there will always be something better right around the corner.

I am not looking to return my GPS because I'm going to some new places in the future. I'm sure I will be extremely happy with it, especially since I have a horrendous sense of direction. I could get lost in a supermarket. I know--the 260 can't help me with that.

Even if the 260 is outdated

Even if the 260 is outdated it will still be around new, used and available for years to come. Look at the streetpilot III, c320 and c330 for example.

Most important, stick with what works for you at the time being. smile

Good Point, bandaid

I'll probably have the 260 for a long while. I usually keep things until they fall apart.

If 260 gets discontinued, so what????

Don't worry about the 260 becoming discontinued. One of the great things about owing a Garmin unit is that if they discontinue a GPS unit, they will continue to support it for years to come. At least they have in the past and I see no reason for them to change.

I have owned the StreetPilot III for about four years. Several years ago they discontinued it, but continued with software updates. Last one was March 2007.

I have since upgraded to nuvi 680 but only recently retired my StreetPilot.

Enjoy your 260 and don't worry about if it gets discontinued.

205/255

Looks like the street price for the two new ones is less than the 200/260's..

Discontinue...

Heck! I want to know if their gonna discontinue the 600 series or even support the MSN Direct aspects of the units. We can't seem to get any forward movement on the MSN problems. I think they need to get off their collective butts and force MS to fix their broken software.

Any thoughts?

MS has enough to worry about

MS has enough to worry about with windows alone.
